So, whilst trying to change windows update settings in the dropdown menu to "never check for updates" after i select it and press ok, it freezes for a moment then says

"You need to provide administrator permission

To complete this task, you need to sign in with an administrator account or ask an administrator to complete this task for you."

I am an administrator of my computer, obviously.. I'm not apart of a homegroup either.

Prior to this i added a registry file to remove windows update policies, because the windows update settings dropdown menu was grayed out, and was pre-selected to auto update without notifications.

This really bothers me, because it's taken me adding a registry file to even have access to the drop down menu in windows update, and now that i have access to the dropdown menu, its saying im not an admin. What the hell? I need help. I don't want windows to update. This is retarded.

You should NEVER disable updates unless you plan to keep it offline. If you're offline, then you don't have to worry about that anyway since it can never check for updates.

Regardless of if you decide to remove all internet connectivity or not, run a full virus scan from a proper AV package.

Well, it's for personal reasons that i want to disable updates. Mainly for privacy. But still, I'm locked out of my own settings... I need to know how I can fix that. Though i'm grateful for a reply, it didn't really answer my question.

That's not a reason, that's an ill informed and frankly stupid excuse for something you should never do. It's like saying you want to remove all your outlets and leave exposed wires around your house because "something could be hiding in the outlet". Sounds pretty stupid right ? 😉

If you're using a local administrator account, only real things that could prevent you from changing update settings are viruses or OS corruption. Check for viruses first, and then run sfc /scannow to see if there are major OS corruptions

Well, I don't like that windows auto installs updates and changes setting without notifying the user. There are lots of things that Microsoft does in absence of the user's presence, you sheep. That's why i'm interested in changing settings. If you don't care that Microsoft does this, so be it. I care, and want to know what's happening underneath the OS surface. Which is why I chose this route. So hop off if you're going to be an un-helpful mule, I'd rather have no response than your response.

What the hell do you even care? It's not your hardware.

AND my system is CLEAN, so be helpful OR like I said HOP OFF.

Windows/Microsoft does NOT change update settings by itself. I have about three dozen machines running 7 and 8, and not a single one changed any settings I put on it. The ONLY reasons for a change to happen are:
1) Your administrator said so. That includes using exchange based email servers that demand certain features enabled/disabled.
2) You have a virus that acts as an administrator
3) You have OS file corruptions

Why not just go linux then? That's the ONLY way to actually know what's going on.

Good, you'll find that nobody wants to respond to people as rude as you. Eventually you'll figure out that my response was spot on and feel stupid about being so rude. Know that nobody will help you solve your problems at that time though.

It's called distributed immunity. Anti-vaxxers (in real world) and anti-updaters (in computers) are HARMING others by refusing to have immunity to most issues. You can do what you want with feature updates (which are optional anyway and won't install automatically), but security updates aren't just for you, it's to stop the spread of most malware before it can even hit.
