cant click anything on the desktop

i am working on my acer e1570 laptop running windows 7. I cant click any icon on my desktop.
it it beacuse of a virus . can u tell me a solution to this problem.

System configuration :
pentium processor intel.
80 gb hard disk drive.
2 mb ram.
avg antivirus installed

boot into safe mode, hit f8 at start up. once in safe mode, see if you still have the problem.
if it boots into safe mode and you are able to click on desktop icons, then be sure to run your virus scanner while in safe mode.
See if that comes up with anything...

If it does still happen in safe mode, it's possible it's an issue with your hardware itself or possibly the driver for your touchpad.
