Can't Complete XP install due to partition problems

I hope someone can help ... I have searched & tried everything relevant I could find, and nothing works.

I had my C: drive fail last week (Win XP Media Center, variant of XP Pro). I had a 2nd WD drive, 1.5 GB with two bootable partitions, each with a version of XP (64 bit on D: & an "emergency" Win XP Media Center install on E:). I finally received my warranty replacement drive from Dell a couple of days ago, re-installed it as my C: drive without any problems. However, I can no longer access the systems on the other two drives. First I tried rebuilding the boot record in the XP recovery console ... it found both installations, but on reboot I kept getting the following error message:

"Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem. Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware. ..."

I went back into the new C: drive install and checked the boot.ini file, and it appears to have a non-standard partition on the both the D: & E: drives. Instead of the usual line that starts with "multi", for E: I have:

signature(44497830)disk(2)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Media Center Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

The D: drive looks similar.

I could access both partitions from the new installation (Windows on C: drive) without any problems, just couldn't boot from them (so I made sure my backups were up to date).

I have tried the suggestions I found on your forum (and other sites) to rebuild the MBR, used fixboot, verified that the NTDETECT & ntldr files are present (even re-copied them from the install disk, jic), all to no avail.

I finally gave up and tried to reinstall, but on the first reboot I get the same error message, and when I boot into the working C: drive install & check the boot ini file, I see the same "non-standard" partition info.

I have also tried deleting the partitions and having them rebuilt during the install process, then trying to reinstall. Doesn't help either, same results.

The new C: drive is a Seagate 750MB drive. The drive on which the D: & E: partitions are on is a Western Digital drive & I used the "WD Align Tool" to set up the partitions as recommended by WD.

Can someone help? I am at my wits end.

I don't have any experience with this problem, but here is a Microsoft article that may help:

ISTM that the solution may involve editing the signature in the boot.ini file to reflect the signature in the MBR of the target drive.

To this end, could we see the partition table and boot sector with Microsoft's Sector Inspector?

Extract the above archive to the one folder and execute the SIrun.bat file. The procedure will generate a report file named SIout.txt.

The article says it's a valid syntax, but I'm not figuring out why it's not being recognized, especially since it was at one time. I have tried editing the boot.ini drive to reflect what's reported by the bootcfg /scan command (\Device\Harddisk1\Partition1), using the "multi" format, but don't know if that is what you're referring to. It didn't work, but perhaps I didn't do it correctly. My boot.ini file currently shows the following:

FYI, I noticed that the dump for the second drive says it's is missing the boot files, so I copied over the 3 files (ntldr, ntbootdd.sys & ntdetect.com) from the C: drive which is working, & rebooted. No change. Same error message.

Actually, I decided to try exactly that last night, & that is what worked, though I had to move the disk with two OS partitions to the first slot for it to work. I have no idea why, & it may just be coincidence, but it would not work with the new drive first. I also disconnected all other hard drives (internal & external) prior to starting, installed on the new 1st partition, then on the new 2nd one, and after verifying that it was working correctly, reconnected the the new drive & repeated there.

I'm going to make a backup of the MBR before I do anything else, then proceed with the Win 7 install, which will hopefully work as well.

Thanks to everyone for all the suggestions ... it helped me work through the problem. While I'm still not quite sure what went wrong & why exactly it finally worked, I have a lot better understanding of the whole process now, and the info you provided was very helpful.
