[SOLVED] Cant Connect an Old Dell - Corsair 850 - Radeon RX 580 GTS 8GB

Hoping someone can help, please - Im failing my gamer kid here.

our Old Dell doesnt have a good enough power supply to run my daughters upgraded video card (XFX AMD Radeon™ RX 580 GTS XXX Edition 8GB) so we got a Corsair 850 which is sitting externally at the moment. The Corsair's 8-pin is going into the GPU, but when computer is powered on nothing happens and no signal. I know Im missing something - I really dont want to get into shorting pins and such if necessary - I searched the forums but I didnt catch anything clear enough for me so figured Id give my specific info.

Can anyone help point to the missing piece in this puzzle so it runs correctly please?

If its just a case what motherboard is being used?

Is it the mini tower or SFF chassis?

Is the Corsair PSU only plugged into the gpu and the rest of the system powered by the original PSU(dual psu setup)?

Its the larger of the two models so prob the SFF Chassis.

Correct on the setup. In laymans the 8-pin cord running out of the GPU is plugged into the 8pin receiver in the Corsair for the PCI CPU if thats correct.

The mini tower is the bigger one.

If the PSU is only plugged into the gpu then nothing is telling it to turn on. Dual PSU setups require special adapters to sync the PSUs, and even then they are normally not recommended.

If you are using the OEM dell T1700 motherboard then it uses a proprietary PSU. The best option is to buy an adapter made to convert a standard 24-pin ATX to work with the proprietary 8-pin power port on the Dell motherboard, then replace the stock psu with the new PSU.
What is the model of the Corsair PSU? You need to make sure the PSU is not group regulated as that will have problems with a 12VO setup.

THANK YOU! Makes sense. Id rather run it all through one anyhow. This problem stemmed when we THOUGHT she was hooked up similarly to the 600W Semi Modular 80+ Bronze, GAMEMAX VP-600-M-RGB as a power supply but when she went to run high end games the computer would shut off. Its fan would come on the it would light up but I guess it was never really powering the card then was it without this adaptor lol. THANKS A MIL

The RMx is DC-DC and a good quality PSU, so you are good there.

Now that Gamemax PSU on the otherhand is junk. It's not actually 600w since the 12v rail is only rated for 480w it's also group regulated. It's basically an outdated pile they slapped RGB on to sell to those whom don't know any better. The best place for it is a recycle bin.

I was going to recommend the 24 pin to 8 pin adapter. Then i seen posts that some don't work or even fry the board. So i deleted that suggestion.
Maybe some of them work, if you read the ratings and stuff.

A local computer store should have a molex to power supply, power on adapter like this.

This shows the pinouts. It's possible to connect the power on wire and a ground so the dell turns on the second power supply.
(I was able to put a bared wire end into the back of a plug and then tape it to that wire so it stays there to make a connection, so you don't have to
modify the existing wires.)
These links should show you were the wires on. You need the 2nd power supply's green power on wire, a black ground connected to the dell ones.

It does look like Dell keeps the power on wire green .
