so this past week i built my new gaming pc and i didnt have the funds requried to get a new monitor. i had an old one that i figured would work but when i tried hooking it up to my new pc through a VGA to VGA cable, it would not work, the monitor kept saying no signal (i am not sure if the pc is wired properly but when i turn it on the fans turn on and everything appears to be functioning) i then bought and hdmi to hdmi cable to try to hook it up to my tv, but when i do that it still says no signal. i hooked another computer up to both the tv and monitor and both work fine. any suggestions?

Solution
Try putting it back in keeping the monitor hookup the same. If you can go to the Device Manager, then click on Display Adapter. If the operating system is detecting the graphics card, the model of graphics card will show up.

Also you can try moving the graphics card to another PCI Express x16 slot.
Then depending upon the outcome, you can troubleshoot the system. The power supply is suspect if the LEDs don't light or the fans don't spin.

Try reseating the DRAM. Make sure that the power connections are all secure. Make sure that the CPU power cable is plugged in.

i removed the graphics card and the system turned on and connected to the monitor. any idea on what could be the problem with the graphics card?

the power supply is 500W and the graphics card requires 450W, it is a NVIDIA Geforce gtx 950

i bought it about 3 days ago and i plugged a 6pin power cable into the only available slot on the graphics card, am i supposed to plug the cable connected to the monitor directly in to the graphics card? it came with a DVI-VGA converter but i dont know how to access the DVI slot as it is covered by some sort of tab and i am afraid i will damage the card if i try to remove the tab

i put the graphics card back in without changing the wiring and once again it came up with no signal on the monitor. i can not play around with the interface as i have not had the chance to install an operating system because i couldnt get it to show on the monitor
also i tried putting it into another PCI slot, and it still showed up with no signal

With the graphics card removed, boot into the BIOS. Go to the area to select your Graphics source. The default is Auto. You need to change it to integrated. Then put your graphics card back in and power it up

The monitor should work with your graphics card in place. Again go to the Device Manager and check your Display Adapter.

Also do the LEDs on the graphics card light up? Do the graphics card fans spin?

I dont understand the first part as im just now installing windows
i dont notice any LEDs on the graphics card but on startup the fan spins for a few seconds then stops

Say the BIOS is set to its default setting. If a graphics card is in place in the PCI Express x 16 slot, the system will detects it as present. It then switches the graphics to that slot so the graphics card becomes the source of the computer graphics (and it's video outputs are active by default).

But since the graphics card is questionable, the graphics have to be set manually to integrated. That way you can see Windows through the monitor (as you have it). Then at the same time, you can find out if the graphics card is being detected by the system (by checking the device manager).
