I know my answer came years late, but it is just for those who is still having the same problem like all the commenters here and using the same model e6420 with i5 running.
I had the same exact the same problem with you guys. I've tried everything, from uninstall/install drivers, finding the right drivers, even upgrade to windows 8, then 10 and then to 7(64bit) and finally to 7(32bit) without even any trace of success. I've tried all the suggestions from almost all the forums in the internet without any success.
Finally, finally.... just a few minutes ago, i found the actual problem. It lies in the hardware. My lappy dont even detect the network adaptor in Device Manager.
I had some old laptops which i have scrapped and savaged some of the parts, and so I just took out it's WLAN adaptor and put it on my e6420. Bang!! i can straight away see all my neighbours network.
Conclusion - the adaptor that came with e6420 is just not compatible (device manager cant even see it) or all this model Intel (Centrino 6200/6300) is just complete crap. There are thousands who wrote in the forums complaining about this problem, yet Dell and Intel reps just gave a generic troubleshooting solution which dont actually never solve anything.
