Can't control GPU fans

I can't control my GPU fans with any software at all. They are running at 100% on startup and sometimes they die down and then come back randomly.

How can I combat this?

ASUS 780 GTX And the temps are staying at like 37 degrees thereabouts, the fans are on full blast so of course they'll be low temps.

Did you install the drivers? If you haven't, do so and that will fix this issue.

I must have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers about 20 times at this stage.

Do you have the Asus GPU tweak software installed? Open that up and on the bottom, select "auto" under fan control. It should regulate the fan speed back down to around 30%. If that doesn't happen, try uninstalling just the GPU tweak program (not the drivers) and installing MSI Afterburner. It works with any GPU. In Afterburner you can create a fan profile in the advanced settings. If it is still stuck at 100%, I'd contact Asus and request an RMA for repair unless you are still able to bring it back for a replacement from the store you bought it from.

I sounds like it might be a problem with the RPM sensor on the GPU itself. The only other thing you might want to try is removing the GPU and checking that the fan wire is seated properly. See if you can do that without removing the fan shroud or any bolts so you don't disturb any of the warranty stickers if there are any. If everything looks fine, it is probably best to start an RMA ASAP. Asus has horrible warranty repair service. I had a GTX 660 that was not working in February. It was around April before I had a working GPU in my PC and that was after 2 "repairs" and 2 replacements. If possible, see if you can contact their California HQ offices directly. If you end up having to send it out to their Indiana repair center, chances are it will come back with the same issue or it will work for a few weeks then start acting up again. I found out that the Indy repair center isn't actually Asus but a 3rd party company called PTSI (Pegatron Technology Service Inc). I believe they are ripping Asus off by trying to repair the same cards as many times as possible. That is just my opinion, though.

Right now it's quiet and I've installed that ASUS software. If by some miracle that has fixed it then that's that, otherwise I'll take a look at the cards fan wire.

If this is all useless then I think I'm going to buy a different companies card, I'm not a fan of ASUS at all.

Drawing from two past experiences:

On one occasion it was hardware related. An RMA revealed that something was defective with the temperature circuit and the fan in turn went default full-RPM thinking it was running hot.

On the other, I had a driver war where I had CCC installed and had tried Afterburner, Trixx, and HIS Turbo recently for custom fan curves (looking for a software preference). All were set on start at start-up by accident, and each one wanted a piece of that profile control. Eliminating all custom profiles and removing the unnecessary extra programs running fixed that one.

That should give you two more options/experiences to think of.

Yes, make sure the connector is seated. Also, make sure that the wires are seated in the connector all the way. The connector is definitely in there since the fans are spinning but it is possible that the signal wire isn't fully seated which is the one that sends the RPM value from the fans. That is usually the 3rd wire (yellow) and the 4th wire is the PWM (blue) which adjust the speed of the fan. The other 2 are power (red) and ground (ground). The colors in parenthesis are typically the colors of the wires although some manufacturers don't color code them.

Okay, after some searching I did find this set of wires and they appeared fine, so I gave them a little push in to be secure just in case but after switching back on it still happened.

I guess I'll need a new GPU, but how do I know this won't happen with that GPU as well, because it doesn't happen in safe mode.

If you experience no problems when your desktop is booted into safe mode, then you are dealing with a driver issue. Safe mode boots all "essential" drivers, your graphics card vendor doesn't make the list here. You have stated you have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers, have you used a sweeper program to do so? You need all remnants of an old driver package removed for a reinstall to be considered successful and using just control panel's remove feature doesn't do that. Have you also ever had another video card installed on this system with the current configuration? If so, you definitely need a driver sweep to get rid of it.

Even if you uninstalled the driver using the control panel / remove programs there will still be traces of it left in your Windows registry which are impossible to find without a driver cleaner app. If it still fails after that, you can always try re-installing Windows completely but that is a long process. If it still doesn't work right after that then you know 100% that your GPU is malfunctioning.
