Can't control my CPU speed etc. anymore..

Hi guys,

I have a little problem;
No matter what I choose for my cpu's bus speed/multiplier etc.. in bios , the values are always going back to under my regular CPU values. (Yes I do save 😉 )

For example, I enter these values in bios:
Multiplier x19 (standard = 16.5. 18.5 for boost, which is off when OC'ing)
Bus speed: 200Mhz (standard for my cpu)

It'll automaticlly change to these values when in windows:
Multiplier x16.5 (normal, so that's fine)
Bus speed: 189Mhz (Under the normal bus speed..? Also @ load)

I'm not sure why it does this..
Is my bios not able to write or something? Is it broken?
Cool 'n Quiet and all those features are off.

Also, I'm not sure if this is related but since it did this ^, it shows "the system failed to boot several times" when powering on my PC :/
The weird thing is; it DOES actually just boot without any problems.

Hope someone can help!
Thanks :)

Specs:
Mobo: Asrock Extreme4 990FX
CPU: Phenom II x6 1100T
RAM: Adata 12Gb kit
PSU: Antec 750w blue
GPU: asus R9 290 OC edition

Sorry for my bad English.

thats strange. its looking like it is a problem with your bios. it just seems to be overall messed up. Unable to write, functions not working. it is very weird. Any thoughts on what youre gonna do? im stumped. im starting to be confident that its a defective motherboard.
Could it be that a program via your os is overriding the settings you put in? Like AMD overdrive or something like that?
Aside from that it looks like you are unable to write to your bios.
Do you have to constantly correct the time of your computer via bios, if so that might be a sign of a dead or defective cmos battery. But i would contact Asrock. Could you give any more side effects that you have other than not being able to change cpu values?

Nope. Nothing is overriding my settings.
Also, no. The time is fine.
I did a few minutes ago, hope they can tell me what's going on.

Hmm.. Any side effects..
Not really actually, other than some f'd up values haha.
Ram running at 1260Mhz, but I entered 1333Mhz in bios.

Oh, and by the way:
If I enter like a multiplier of 19, It Does stay in the bios itself, but windows just shows something else.
So it does save, I guess..
It just doesn't apply the settings.

2 things;
1. Try flashing in new bios.
2. Taken from another thread "It may be that the 3.6 GHz overclock is just too aggressive (i.e. unsuccessful) and the system has reverted back to stock default settings.

Start with a less aggressive overclock like 3.0 GHz and see if the settings stick. If the settings stick then increment the FSB and try again. Keep doing this until you reach a point where the settings don't stick which means you have found the maximum overclock that your system is able to handle and then choose an FSB that is just slightly lower than the maximum."
Im not exactly the most informed on overclocking but i have an understanding of mostly everything else. But are you trying an over the top cpu clock? it could be that your motherboard doesnt allow the speed you set to be used. Try a minor multiplier/clock change.

1. Going to try that right now.
2. Nothing sticks. Even the auto settings are not my default speeds. I'm feeling like it's more like (as you said) a overwriting problem or something like that. Can't find any program which is able to change my cpu speeds tho..

Okay so I flashed the bios to the latest version.
Sadly, everything is the same..

Something weird I just noticed:
Cool 'n quiet + turbo core are now both enabled, but they don't seem to work.
My multiplier is just always at 16.5, never lower. (It should be with QnQ enabled..)

Also, btw:
If I change my bus speed manually in windows, everything is fine and everything is at it's standard value.

Ehm, I guess I'll wait for asrock's reply. I really hope it can be fixed somehow, I have no money for a new mobo atm :/
It's kinda weird tho, it always worked great, and out of the sudden, it 'stopped' working..
Ah well thanks anyways! I'll keep you updated if you want 😉

So I had a little conversation with Asrock, and they say my cpu or my motherboard is broken.
Not yet sure which one of them.

Isn't it weird how I can't control my cpu via bios, but can via windows?
This leads me to thinking my motherboard is broken, not my cpu.

That would kinda sucks tho :/
I wanted to upgrade my cpu in the coming weeks, but I think I can't afford it to buy a motherboard AND a cpu, sadly 🙁

Hopefully Asrock sends me a free board (if it's broken ofc.) 😀
(I highly doubt this haha..)

I feel you. Atleast its not something alot more serious. Atleast with this problem you can hold out till you feel the absolute need for a new motherboard. I always like to take customer service into account when buying products.
