Here's the situation: I have a Win 10 computer connected by Ethernet to a router/cable modem. We have a Win 8 computer in another room, and it can detect the shared drives on my Win 10 computer.

But upstairs is my wife's Win 10 computer, which she got a year ago. Initially it could detect and access the shared folders on my computer. About two months ago, it stopped detecting them (after a Windows MS update?). But it does detect the shared drive as a media drive, just not as a file folder.

I adjusted the sharing permissions on both PCs. Still no luck. So I created a shared folder on my wife's computer. For a few weeks, my computer could access her shared folder. Now I'm getting an error message that I don't have permission to access her folders.

Does this make any sense? I'm assuming the problem is with her machine.

Disabled firewalls on both computers. Same problem. I can detect her shared folders, but can't get permission to access. She can't detect my shared folders at all, though she can detect the shared drive as a media drive only.

Is your Win 10 computer using a fixed IP? Try deleting the drive and typing in the ip address and share name. Be sure to use different login credentials. Also check to see if your anti virus may be blocking access. Also windows is dropping support for workgroup shares. So use network file shares only (SMB v2)

Media shares use a different protocol. Make sure these ports are available:

It could be a number of things.

In file explorer see if you can call up (either) machine using "\\computername"
It should pull the computer up if your file sharing is set correctly. With Win 10, unless you are using that homegroup trash you need to set a password on both computers. Within the options for local sharing tell it to use username and password.
So then, when you access the shared folder on the other computer it should pop up a request for the user name and password you want to use with a click box to remember the credentials.

i wonder if this is a permission issue? The Full control boxes for "Everyone" don't have checkmarks. When I try to enable them, it says "failure to enumerate objects in container. Access denied."

How do I enable these?
