Can't figure it out

So I have just finished building my desktop. It consists of:

Radeon HD 6870 1GB graphics card
1TB Sata Beracude HD
I7 2600k CPU
700W PSU
8GB DDR1333 RAM
Running it w/ Win 7. 64B
S1155 Asus P8Z68-V PRO Motherboard

I have to admit I have not built a system in quite awhile and when I powered it up I found that it did not work at all, in fact I had to bring it to a friends house so that he could point out to me that I failed to connect the CPU power connector in! On top of that the case I have doesn't seem to have the right connector for my CPU PWR. It has an 8 slot connector jack, but the PWR supply I have does not have an 8 slot CPU Pwr connector, it only has the 4Pin connector which I currently have running it. I suppose my question in all of this is after I got the system up and running and all of the drivers loaded I started up World of Warcraft to see just how good the system runs. I Started it up and put it on Ultra setting with the highest resolution to find that I get video lag. I'm unsure if my expectations were over sighted or if something is just not right with the way I build it or connected something. I was hoping someone might be able to help me out with an idea or suggestion.

First of all, at what resolution are you gaming?

When you are in game and it lags make sure if it is CPU or the GPU that is lagging the game. Those extra four pins that you don't have there are for extra power to the CPU when it needs to work harder.

I have been playing around with it all night. I am trying many different game settings varying from Ultra settings to Low settings in World of Warcraft. It doesn't seem to matter much which setting it is on. It still gets somewhat "choppy" when I turn the camera in a 360. It completely freezes and then starts is fine for a second and repeats.

As far as the power goes, I haven't ever dealt with this sort of issue before. There is an 8pin connector jack available for the power and numerous 4pin 2pin and 6 pin connectors available with my power supply but no 8pin, I'm seriously considering inserting an additional 4pin connect along side the other one. I checked the motherboard manual and it simply shows that 4pins on one row are ground and the other is 12VDC.

Any help would be highly appreciated. Another quick question would be how can I tell if it's my processor or GPU causing the issue?

So I connected the other 4pin pwr connector and It has not shown any improvement. I'm running the resolution at 1920x1080 on ultra settings. Still choppy.

you installed all the mother board drivers from the disc ? ram is running at specified speed and voltage ? you went to windows update ?....... and the big one. you say you're running the game at max settings at 1900 res. I find running most games these days at 1600 res or above you need a card with at least 2gig of memory. Crank your settings back. Your card can't handle it.

Disable vsync in catalyst, helps my 6870 a bit but still it has a bit tearing in the more demanding games. Had the same problem with a 560 TI.

So I did everything you mentioned Morgan. I had done everything except check my RAM speed, finish a few microsoft updates for WIn 7, and the last thing I didn't realize was in the game I was setup to work on DirectX 9 instead of 11. I changed it to 11 and VIOLA ultra settings at 1900 res flawlessly! WOOWEEE Thanks everyone for the excellent advice and help. I do appreciate it! I'll disable Vsync in catalyst as well Rob, thanks for the tip!
