Can't find the source of problems!

Hey guys, sorry if I've classified the category incorrectly; I'm honestly not sure if my mobo is the problem or not, but I've run out of ideas and I desperately need some guidance! [Full build at bottom of post!] Also apologies for the length of this; I just wanted to try to give as much potentially helpful info as I could.

I have an old (circa 2013) custom PC. Never had many major issues with it. About two years ago, my ex-boyfriend accidentally broke one of my PCIe slots. I moved my video card to the other slot and it worked fine. There's a piece of cardboard stuck in the broken slot to keep the pins from touching, so I don't know if that broken slot could have anything to do with this. Additionally, for the last couple of years, the USB ports have all been misbehaving. There are 3 out of the 6 ports on the back that give me trouble, and both of the ports on the front. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't.

In the last week or so, the computer has really started acting up, leading to a seemingly endless cycle of BSODs. So far, I have gutted the rig and deep cleaned it (very carefully), updated all drivers via ioBit Driver Booster (free version), run system scans including malware/spyware/etc, run the Windows system repair numerous times, booted into BIOS to reset to defaults, tried safe mode, memory testing (removed individual RAM sticks to check for functionality), run a system restore to as far back as I could (July 12th)... I'm probably even forgetting some of the other stuff I've done. It's gone on for days now. dI noticed with ioBit that every time I got to the USB drivers, the computer would blue-screen when they were updated... I disabled some USB setting that I can't remember now and can't find, and that fixed the problem, but only temporarily.

Currently, the PC refuses to recognize any mice. The keyboard works fine, as does the wireless internet adapter. I tried to manually update the Mouse and Keyboard Detection Driver to no avail, so right now I can't even efficiently navigate to get anything done. I need to at least try to back up my HDD one more time onto a 2TB external drive because I'm afraid of losing everything if I make a mistake.

The only guesses I have are:
-The USB ports are somehow bugged? damaged? They've been a problem for a while
-The motherboard is tapping out.
-I'm an idiot
-The broken PCIe slot is somehow contributing?
-Poltergeist?

My brain is fried because I don't do this on a regular basis; I relearn all the hardware and software info every time and I'm confused now and I have no idea where to start over at this point... please help if you can, welcoming any suggestions!! (Side note: I am prepared for the possibility that this rig is just older than God and it's time to retire, but I'm hoping I can salvage it for maybe another 6mos to a year.)

I don’t think I do. My old external drive died and the new one only has photos, videos, etc on it as far as I know 🙁

Well...if I had that....I'd probably try that first....but if I didn't.....I might consider reloading Windows. Can you get what you want off the drive?

The other thing I would look at are the USB connections and the cables. I would remove and inspect all the connections and I would swap in different cables if I had them.

Actually while I was doing this I would disconnect everything, inspect then reconnect.

I don't think it's the USB ports themselves.

I would also check that cardboard in the PCIe slot....although "normally" you wouldn't need the cardboard, but you might being it's broken.

If I can get in and at least back up all my media, I can try to reinstall windows. I've just been afraid to plug in the backup drive if there's a bug or something, and finding an open USB port that will work is a pain in the butt. I will try to at least get it to a point where I can back up. I don't think I have the Windows 7 disc anymore though, so I'll have to figure out how to download it because I can't afford a new copy at the moment. I'll try this first and report back if it fails. Thank you so much, Jay :)
