can't format my added SSD

this SSD i am trying to add to my computer already has data on it. I want to format it, but every time I click on "format" it says its being used by another process and wont let me format until the processes have been exited out of. i used to have another drive that was drive E. this ssd i am adding is shown as E as well and with only 84gb left on it. How do I erase this drive? Disk management has the word "format" whited out.

You just need to delete the partition and create a new partition on the drive. Then you can format it and use it for storage or install an OS on it. Here is how:

it's not working. It won't let me delete the volume. it gives me no option, or its not highlighted. i tried both options. diskpart said that the device is in use and to use OVERRIDE parameter. I dont know what that is, and I dont feel like ruining my computer.

im looking in disk management right now, and I see drive E says "page files and primary partition." my main SSD has "primary partition" next to it as well, along with dump file, etc.

It seems like maybe the drive is being used for the paging file (Virtual memory). Go into Control pane, System, Advanced system settings, click on Settings next to Performance. In the Performance window that opens click on the Advanced tab. Click Change. Uncheck manage paging file for all drives and then select the drive letter for the drive in question. Select No page file for that drive. Make sure the C:/ drive is still selected as System managed size. Save settings and reboot. Try disk management again.

It says E is system managed and C: is "no paging file." when I click C: as system managed and E: as no paging, I'll click back to C: and it will be back to "no paging file." iuno why it keeps switching on me.

also, the way the picture is, is the exact way it opened up for me. E: was selected as system managed

EDIT: i didn't click "set" next to the options lol. It worked though, thanks! I had about 14gb of files that were taken off....

I also had one more question. I have a 500gb samsung evo that has an OS on it. would my computer be confused between my main boot SSD and the samsung ssd since both have OS's on them, or would I be okay and just format, like usual, for it to be used as storage?

I dont want to bug you about this, but I posted a reply from your comment at the same time you replied to mine, so im not sure if the notification went through, but here is the question i replied with: I have a 500gb samsung evo that has an OS on it. would my computer be confused between my main boot SSD and the samsung ssd since both have OS's on them, or would I be okay and just format, like usual, for it to be used as storage?

Do you WANT to format one of the two, or do you want to leave it as is? So long as the correct drive with the OS installation is designated as the boot drive in the BIOS, the system would be fine with both drives having an OS on them. If you want to re-format the other drive, it should be no problem. Just delete the partition, recreate the partition and format it. It might not let you just format it but you can try. Make sure you're working on the correct driver though. So long at the drive letter corresponds to the proper drive your fine.

In other words, yes, you should be able to format the Samsung with no problem.
