Can't Get 1920x1080 to work

Hello, I have a LE19R86BD Samsung TV which I am using for a monitor as my computer. I would like to use 1920x1080 screen resolution, but for some reason, I cannot get it. I cannot change the aspect ratio of my TV, when using it as a monitor, to 16:9 which would allow me to use 1920x1080. Can anybody help me to get it working. Also, if it helps, I have a Radeon HD 7770 and I'm using a VGA cable, which apparently does support it, but I also have a spare HDMI cable. The only reason I do not use the HDMI cable it because every time I try to use it, my TV says "Mode not supported" which I assume it means it doesn't support my current resolution of 1440x900. BigMack is correct that the VGA input on TV's only do 1366X768 resolution. This means the only way you will be able to get the res. you want is do an HDMI cable. Does your TV have more than one HDMI input? I have a similar setup and can't use one HDMI port but the other works. It has something to do with the type of signal the PC puts out and the TV can't seem to recognize it.

its because a lot of smaller televisions arent 1080p. that tv supports 1080i(720) the highest resolution it truely supports is 1440x900 16:10 aspect ratio.
edit well as you see all these answers flooded in whilst i googled your display gunner being correct the vga cable is capable of 1080 i have used on before

VGA is typically limited to 1366x768 in that situation

Can you try HDMI and having your computer output 1080p and see if that works?

I swapped to HDMI (And had the VGA still plugged in), and then made the second connection to 1920x1080. I swapped over to HDMI and then the picture became very grainy. Any other thoughts? It seems that it does output 1920x1080 but it's of a very poor quality.

@OP, are you changing the Aspect Ratio using the TV controls, or the PC controls? Your sentence was a little confusing. You are getting 1440x900 right now, over VGA, right? That's a 16x10 ratio (as I'm sure you're aware). What are you doing when trying to change aspect ratio, and what is the thing that stops you from changing it?

I only have one output on the TV but two on the computer. Only one works which is the one that I am using. I used the HDMI cable, set it to 1920x1080 but like I responded to BigMack previously, it shows a very poor quality picture and has large black borders around the screen.

Yes I am using 1440x900 currently on the VGA cable, and yes changed the aspect ratio to 16:9 which I believe is for 1920x1080

Black borders around the screen is kind of a small detail to leave out lol...

That most likely means you need to change the overscan/underscan option in CCC.

Sorry about leaving that out btw, lol. So how would I go about changing the overscan/underscan?

I used the the overscan /underscan when i set mine up to get rid of my borders just like BigMack says to do.

It's a setting in CCC... just open that up and I think it's under display properties or something like that. Shouldn't be difficult to find.

I changed the overscan/underscan but still there was massive black borders + the picture was still grainy.

just to make sure you opened CCC then My digital flat panel then Scaling options to change the over/underscan?

over/under scan will not help the grainy look but help get rid of the borders as long as the TV can Actually do 1080P and not just 1080I

Yep, I did. But the borders still existed and I couldn't do much. Perhaps my TV is limited to 1440x900?

In your case I believe you are out of luck and my have to stick with the lower res.

That's just how TVs are... they don't take higher resolution over VGA. Pretty sure it's a way they try to prevent copy protection violations.

You may need to mess with overscan/underscan options in CCC to correct fuzziness, assuming it is displaying 1080p resolution to a 1080p TV and yet is still fuzzy.

Thats not right. I am using a 22" 1080p vizio as a secondary display with a VGA connection and getting full resolution.

As for the OP.. like someone else says, your TV only supports 1080i, not 1080p. Basically the 1440x900 is as high as it will go.
