cant get external monitor to work

i have a lenovo g50-45 80E3 and when i try to connect my Dell se198wfpv via vga the dell screen flashes and says 1: Auto detect (analog input) entering power saving mode then dell screen turns black and power led turns orange any advice will be accepted, thanks.

Your laptop keyboard probably has one of the Function keys along the top row dedicated to switching screens from the built-in to an external. Look for the screen icon, and if it shows up in blue, tap that one and the Fn key to the left of your spacebar at the same time.

That should connect to the external screen when it's ready.
