I have a dell xps desktop. Its pretty old (2007 model I think) and I can't get it to run anything except my vista that I have that came with it. Also it pops up with "floppy disk 40 error" before booting up every time. Got any ideas? I'd like to run windows 7 or 8 on it but planning to do some serious updates soon like GPU, CPU, and motherboard. Should I just wait? Or will it work to get the OS and then upgrade?

After you upgrade the motherboard you'll probably find new RAM is also required. Maybe a new hard drive as well if you are using IDE. After you upgrade the GPU, you'll probably find a new PSU is required. Then you'll find the front ports aren't USB3, and need a new case as well.

So there will be nothing left of the machine after a serious upgrade. It would be cheaper to sell it as a working unit, then buy a whole new machine.
