Hello TH,
New to the forum, but ive been messing with computers since i was 13.

Im having an issue ive spent over 5 hours trying to resolve and im out of ideas.

What im trying to do:
The wireless signal in my room is mediocre at best. Everywhere else in the house, even at my neighbors, gets at least 4-5 bars at 50+mbps from my modem/router. My room seems to get 2 bars MAX, and thats on a good day, at 1mbps. I COULD move the modem/router combo closer, but then we would have wires running through the house. Id like to avoid the tripping hazard as we have dogs.
Im wanting to use an older router as a wireless access point to improve signal in my room. My parents have this set up at their house and it works flawlessly, so i know it can be done. Their router they are using as an access point only has the power wire plugged in, no ethernet or anything else.

What i have:
Main router/modem : Arris tg862g/ct by Xfinity - Its connected through comcast coax
Router im trying to use as access point (AP) : Belkin F5D8236-4 V1

What ive done so far:

Everything i can think of. Ive tryed to much stuff to list. I believe im just not doing it right as i havent done this in over 7 years and i had help in doing so.

I am now at a loss and run out of ideas. Im very capable of following instructions, but everything ive followed online has left me with the same issues.
Everytime i change the IP and Subnet of the Belkin to match my Arris, i am no longer able to log into the Belkin. EVERYTIME, no matter what i try. I just cant seem to get them to talk.

If anyone can walk me through step by step as what to do, id greatly appreciate it. Since i have nothing better to do, im going to sit here and watch for replies, so please expect a very fast response from me.

Thanks in advance,
Greg

Most newer routers support "access point mode"

But if it is too old you will probably have to flash dd-wrt or another custom firmware

The reason setting your router and modem to that same ip address isn't working is because that crested a conflict

Traffic trying to get to the Internet go to 192 168.1.1 .. but you also have another device that isn't a gateway with the same address

This also will never work because routers separate two network's from each other. You'll never be able to have two 192.168.1.0/24 networks connected to each other with a router in between

But if we can get the router to demote itself and function like an aces point with the custom firmware we will be good

The router is not supported by DD-WRT.

I think he wants to use it as a repeater so he does not have any wires on the floor.

I think you need to get a different router that will support Bridge mode or is supported by 3rd party firmware like DD-WRT.
