Cant get to 144hz with displayport (Stuck on 85hz!)

Hello! Im currently having problems with my ASUS ROG XG27VQ. It is advertised to be capable up til 144hz, however, I cant seem to enable that setting in my Nvidia control center.
The option of 144hz is available, but whenever I apply the setting of 144hz, my screen blacks out momentarily and my monitor shows that it has lost the display port signal. This is then followed by it resetting back to its initial refresh rate (85hz)
Im running a Aero 15X laptop through the displayport and the graphics card on the laptop is
NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1070 GDDR5 8GB with Max-Q design
if it helps.
Also, I was wondering if the generic displayport cable I’ve gotten could be the problem? (Standard 1.1 mini display port to display port 1.8m cable)
Thanks!

That ebay brand doesn't say much at all. Ive tried Alogic once before and the plug end housing split apart out of the packaging. Wouldn't trust their quality control.

Startech and Accell are certified Vesa (Displayport founder) brands anongst others but those two ive remembered. Original monitor cables are also certified for your info.

Displayport cables can be wired different and some pins not connected. Some are only rated for 1080p/60Hz.

Didn't the monitor come with one or is it too short?

Look at Accell and Startech brands, known for better quality assembly of video cables.

Edit; The cable should be High Bit Rate (HBR) and not Reduced Bit Rate (RBR). Is there anything written on the cable cord to verify which one you have?

Sorry, my fault for not looking up the monitor, I saw it was 27" in the name so I assumed 1440p 😛

I would still try a higher quality cable though.

The dp cable that came with my monitor was DP-DP male and my laptop only has a mini DP 🙁
I'll try getting a better cable then! The cable that i bought seems really generic with no identification of such features. Heres the link if you wanna take a look!

Im in Australia, making my options pretty limited for the moment.. Would something like this cable suffice?
