Hi,

Up until around two days ago, i have been using 3G broadband on my Windows 7 machines. This has worked as it says on the tin, until the software supplied with the devices did not want to connect anymore. Having tried all the tricks, like reinstalling drivers, using safe mode to do same, checking all my software is up-to-date etc. i still cannot get the devices to install correctly, as the "Modem" part (e.g. "ZTE Proprietary USB modem" on my ZTE MF626) fails to load it's drivers WITH ANY DEVICE WHICH USES A DIALUP-STYLE CONNECTION.

The exact error I found in Device Manager is: "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)"

This happens if i plug in a USB dongle, or use bluetooth to link to my cell phone. Does anyone know how to force the drivers to load, and/or make this problem go away? I suspect there has been an update recently which has broken this.

Thanks in advance

CSnake

Solution
It took me months but I finally got the same problem fixed.
Here's what I did:

Completely remove all traces of your modem software and drivers.

In Regedit, I went to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
-SYSTEM
--CurrentControlSet
---Control
----Class
-----{4D36E96D-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

There should be a string called "Installer32", if not, create a new string and call it "Installer32" and set its value equal to "mdminst.dll,ClassInstall32"

Re-Install modem software and Drivers.

Worked for me.
Hope it works for you as well.
Csnake,

VVhocare5 is correct -- a System Restore would be a good place to start as it could have been a Windows Update that caused the issues you are now experiencing. Have you attempted to remove the drivers, REBOOT, and then reinstall the drivers / applications?

Csnake, did you ever find a solution?
I have the same problem as you, and I have tried everything the past few days.
All my software/windows/drivers are up to date, even tried some dodgy drivers as well, but still getting code 31 error.
No 3g modem will install on my windows 7 64bit proffessional anymore🙁

I am assuming it is windows update that caused this, it is the only system files that was changed.

I cannot do a system restore, too far in the past now (3 weeks).

please help!

Just want to say thank you very much for this! I have been trying constantly for days to get this working when I finally came across this solution....worked a treat!

Hey, you also saved my ass...man I tried everything...all kind of modems were not working, USB 3G Modems, Telephones connected through USB or bluetooth..anything...
Just a comment, a needed a restart after the Registry modification.

Thanks a lot!!

Regards
