Can't Install ATI Multimedia Center 9.06.1

I wanted to upgrade my MMC on my All In Wonder 9600 running under Windows
XP. I uninstalled all the previous ATI software and installed the new
software in the order specified on the website. The Catalyst installs
fine....however when I install MMC I get an error at the very end where the
dialog box indicates "Publishing product information" and the InstallShield
Wizard pops up "Failed". I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the
software from disc but I'm still getting the same error. It's as if Windows
XP doesn't approve.

This is so frustrating....why did I even try to upgrade? I hope I don't
have to reinstall Windows XP.

I get the same thing, and ATI has not found an answer to this.
You can get around this by installing MMC version 9.03 on top of the 9.06.1.
Do not uninstall, just install over the 9.06.1 version. All the apps should
report version 9.06 when you run them, so the new version is there. The
install by 9.03 finishes the 9.06.1 screwed-up install.

Wow....how can they release such buggy code? How can I get the 9.03
version? I don't see it on the site.

I found 9.03 and tried your suggestion but still get the same "Failed"
error. Oh well, guess its time to reinstall XP. Thanks ATI!

Let us know how you get on with the MMC install on a fresh installation of
XP. I suggest you install XP, motherboard chipset drivers, DirectX 9.0c then
remaining drivers before you install MMC's prerequisites in order (and
rebooting at the end of each installation) then MMC (rebooting before
attempting to run it). Reboots after each installation stage are important
as is the need for the installation to be made with NOTHING else running in
the background (such as antivirus software etc). I've installed every
version from about MMC 7.2 up until today's 9.06.1 and by following the
above, I've never experienced such issues as you've seen. When I did try to
"upgrade" MMC by installing a newer version while the old was still on the
machine that caused a hissyfit but an uninstall of both and reinstall of
only the new version fixed it - lesson is not to upgrade but to remove old
before installing new. The procedures for MMC installation are very modular
and lengthy but if followed to the letter (instructions on their website) on
a correctly set up machine with nothing else running in the background, will
likely result in success. Only after your've got MMC installed and tested
working fine should you consider installing any other software.

I would try using the Cat uninstaller program to get rid of the previous ATI
installs and reinstall the ATI software before doing something as drastic as
reinstalling XP. Make sure you have all of the support files installed
first. I'm in the habit of installing the capture drivers before the Cat
drivers(per the release notes) and just using the standard Control Panel and
not CCC. 9.06 doesn't work correctly with RW drivers less than 3.01. I'd
disconnect a RW before starting and not reinstall it until MMC is working.
Installing in the proper order is very important. Good luck.

Try a registry cleaner? Such as Regclean (should be free).

Thats a Windows Installer error from the section for displaying advertising or
whatever.
If it made the software actually not install then you might need to clear the
%temp% folder.

I dont remember the link but a search of mskb for +windows +installer +cleanup
should find
the Windows Installer Cleanup utility. That may help cleanup a failed install.

I did a fresh install of XP followed by all the criticial updates (including
SP2) and DirectX 9.0c. I then installed the latest Catalyst followed by MMC
9.06.1. Everything is working great now. Although you are correct in that
previous software should be uninstalled first, I've never had such a hard
time updating any other software (including Microsoft's)...you would think
ATI would be more forgiving in their installation procedures!

Tried all that...didn't work. Uninstalling had no effect...apparently the
registry was beyond help.

Agreed - they should also offer MMC in the form of a complete ISO which can
be used to burn a CD in my opinion (downloadable by verification from an
existing suitable MMC CD - much as like the current DVD Decoder download).
The current setup of having to install a before b and then reboot before C
etc is unduly tedious. Having used my MMC 8.1 CD on a fresh XP install and
having it install the latest drivers, latest DirectX and latest MMC (all
latest versions at the time and including latest prerequisites) all in the
correct order and automatically is the way it should be.

Although it would be fiddly for the development team having to code the CD
setup scripts/files every time, I believe some (or maybe over 100%) of the
cost should be recoverable in reduced tech support dept calls. My suggestion
has been submitted to ATI and I encourage you to do the same if you believe
this would be an improvement.
