I am upgrading to win7pro. I have vista ultimate. I dl 7 from my school website and it gave me the os in .rar. so I unpacked in my temp folder then copyied it to my dvd which has been formatted and ready to burn.

Now I know that im suppose to have this as an iso on the dvd and not as just files and folders. but when i used my HBCD program that makes files into iso it didnt work. So I thought maybe just putting the files on the DVD would work. Well when I rebooted with DVD in it said to enter install disk when "boot from cd press <enter>" came on the screen.

The mobo drivers are installed. the computer recognizes my SSD and the boot priority is to my DVD drive. So the only problem is the install of win 7.

How do I put my downloaded version as an iso and what am I doing wrong?

It is possible that the ISO you have been downloading is corrupt at the source. This is an alternative source. They are both legitimate direct from MS that allow the same 30day trial before you need to install the key. Of course you can install the key as you install it. If you are not having success with the already tried methods and software, give UltraISO a go. Works great. I have been with it for several years.

If you know someone who has a windows 7 installation...
But in order to use imageburn you would need to locate the iso that you downloaded right? I dont see one in the folder windows 7 download.
All i see is
setup.exe
bootmgr
bootmgr.efi
autorun.inf
few folders:
boot
efi
support
sources
upgrade

So when I use my iso program I look in the windows 7 dvd folder and its blank. So no iso to burn to dvd. Ill try using your link.

That's a good tutorial find : )

Ok so Imgburn is awesome first of all.. and the step by step link you gave made it easy to use. But I ran into another problem. It was in the process of finalyzing the disc and it popped up an error saying "failed to read sector". Now the only thing I could think of that would cause this is that I bought dual layer dvds and maybe my DVD drive doesnt read dual layer? I dont know if it does or not but the drive isnt being able to read the disk in the imgburn test.

Im also wondering if I even need to verify the reading of the sectors. I went and cancelled instead of continue on the program because I dont want to sit through every bad sector. But the image is burned on the DVD so would it be able to work? Maybe I should give it a try instead of waiting til the morning to buy a single layer dvd.

dual layer disk shouldn't be a problem. As nikorr asked, do you have a usb pen at least 4GB in size? I favor UltraISO for manipulating ISO's. It will also write the image to a USB device.

in UltraISO, click on Bootable, click on Write Disk Image. Choose your device. This action will erase everything else on the USB device.

Boot from the USB and install.

Ok so I followed all the directions and its in the process of making the bootable usb. I used for the iso the winrar archive file that i got originally. Hopefully thats what I was supposed to use? Anyway we will find out if it works soon.

edit: I followed nikorrs link not ultraISO. No offense but he was the first to respond.

none taken. let us know how it goes.

Hey, choose whatever works for u : )

I'll check in the morning how did u do, /going to sleep/.

Good luck Gneosis.

k so i used the microsofts tool for bootable disk and it made the usb bootable so i restarted and made sure that it was booting off the removable and it said disk read error.
ugh ..

For the vista not booting, insert the vista installation disk and choose the repair my computer option. It should search out installations and repair them automatically.

try re-writing the iso to the usb drive

So what I did was install vista on my new ssd and redownloaded the win 7 iso from my school website. Still same problem with the usb. Its saying in boot setup that it doesnt even see a removable device and my usb is plugged in.. so I used the dvd and its not working either. Now it wont see my ssd in cmos anymore. So i went back to my old hd and used vista repair on it and thats how im talking to you guys right now. I think I might just have to ask for a real win7 dvd mailed to me.

ill try that tonight. Only problem is is that cmos doesnt recognize my ssd anymore I think it got burned out. Thats what I was going to use for the os.

edit: it did recognize it before and I installed vista on it. Then I was going to install win 7 on it with usb and after it didnt work it rebooted and didnt recognize the ssd.

K so everything worked. This case is done. Thanks for the help guys. Now Im just customizing everything. I have a little problem with the pagefile. I went to allocate 6GB in a new partition and then made both my ssd and my hd no paging file. when I rebooted it said that max was 200MB for all drives. I checked and the partition still shows 6GB for paging so I dont know whats going on with that.
