I recently had to re-install XP (I really like XP) and had a lot of problems, drivers, etc. I think everything is working OK now Internet, audio, etc.). However, I can't install Windows 2000. I've tried my original W 2000 CD, and a new to me copy from a reliable eBay vendor. Both of then get a message that says "we" can't verify the license number. My original W 2000 CD has been installed on many PC's thru the years, most recently on a Windows 10 PC. Any ideas?

... but used to have different media for different distribution channels, and keys don't mix between channels (eg OEM key won't work on retail media). Not different than XP works, either.

If you actually bought you own copy of w2k it will need activation. OEM's won't but retail copies do, just like XP, and they can get 'locked out' by MS when they feel that the key has been compromised or used too many times.

While you certainly need a correct key for the media (VLK, retail, OEM, etc.) There is NO activation in 2000. Just pop in a correct key and go.
