So I cleared my HDD and went to reinstall windows 8.1. I'm at this screen where its asking me where I want to install windows, all of the destinations (drive 0 partition 1, drive 0 partition 2 and drive 0 partition 3) say that windows cant be installed there.

Drive 0 partition 1 says "Windows cannot be installed on this disk. The selected disk has an MBR parition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed to GPT disks. Windows cannot be installed to this hard space. Windows must be installed to a partition formatted to NTFS."

Drive 0 partition 2 says "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed to GPT disks."

Drive 0 partition 3 says "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed to GPT disks. Windows cannot be installed to this hard disk space. The partition was reserved by the computer's Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM).

I dont know what partition 1 and 3 are, but I'm certain that partition 2 is the 1tb HDD that came with my PC as it has 930gb remaining so I guess thats where I'd want to install Windows... what can I do about this??

Solution
The solution depends on the boot device (the usb or dvd disk you have your windows 8.1 ready on it) and whether you have another working PC on hand.
IF your boot device support both boot modes which are EFI and LEGACY, you can now:

    ■ enable LEGACY boot in your bios setting
    ■ enter boot mode selection and boot into LEGACY
    ■ in this mode you should be able to install windows on the MBR partition.

IF your boot device only support EFI mode, you need to rely on a working pc to achieve your target.
You can either

  • ■ recreate a boot device using 3rd party software like "rufus" which supports both booting modes. OR
    ■ reformat the hard drive and make sure it is in GPT partition structure. You may also need 3rd party software to do...
