My computer can't seem to detect my my external hard drive. However, the hard drive still makes noises and the light is still blinking.

I've changed the wires twice and tried recovering the data on two computers but to no avail.

1) External harddrive is not new
2) Has been working fine before but completely stopped working two days ago.

Please advise. Thanks.

Hi

Since you have tried on 2 PC's it is unlikely a USB problem on 2 PC's

You have not said if 2.5" or 3.5" drive
It is possible for power supply for 3.5" drives to fail so this should be checked first

Can usb disk case be opened?
If usb drive is recent it is probably SATA rather than ATA/IDE interface

recent USB external drives may be non standard with USB to SATA bridge circuitry integrated on hard disk circuit board instead of being part of usb drive tray.

If USB to SATA bridge circuitry not on hard drive circuit board then a replacement USB tray may work if USB 2 SATA bridge circuit board is faulty.

Hello,
In addition to what Mike said, could you please tell us the brand and model # and size of the external HDD? What OS are you using it with (?XP) and have you connected it to any other computer (?Apple) recently. Also take a look at all the removable drive case connections. Are there alternative connections, like an eSATA or Firewire connection, and is there an external power connector choice on it?
