SO ive been trying to overclock my cpu for the past few days..I have an AMD FX-6300 and an MSI motherboard..When i boot my pc up i hit DEL to bring up the bios and the bios looks nothing like any of the ones ive seen or read about resulting in me not being able to understand how to operate it. The bios says CMOS technology at top and the date is 199?-2005..Im thinking the bios is outdated, do i install a newer bios?? Never overclocked before and am brand new to it so not sure what to do.

Solution
You see the overclocking word there? Definitely can overclock. Click on advanced bios and report back what options you can click on.
Download the manual from the MSI site for the specific motherboard you have. The manuals are usually found under support. It should explain overclocking options and how to install BIOS updates. Then go back to the site and see if any updates are available for that specific motherboard and, if so, download the BIOS update and install it per the instructions in the manual.

basically with the 6300 you want to gradually increase the multiplier a couple of points at a time until the system crashes.then back it off until it runs stable.this is your best stock overclock.test your overclock in between increases in the multiplier with a program like occt.once you have your best stock oc you can try increasing cpu voltage a little at a time along with multiplier increases.as always check your overclock with occt.always watch your temps as,unless you have a better than stock cooler, you arent going far.another thing to look out for is does the vrms on your mb have heatsinks?this is another limiting factor.you should be able to approach 4.0ghz even without the heatsinks on your vrms, but would recommend an aftermarket cpu cooler.i have the same processor with a hyper 212 evo and have hit a stable 4.6ghz.i,however have heatsinks on my vrms.basically when overclocking change things a little at a time.
