Can't play 4k HEVC video even though I have the hardware for it?

Hello,

First off, my specs:
i7-6700k
gtx 1080
16gb ram
10tb ironwolf hdd, and other hard drives but not relevent here.

So I was googling my problem when I stumbled upon this, so I followed the best answer there and downloaded downloaded the k-lite codec and Media Player Classic (even though I had VLC), and I still have the same problem. Media Player Classic wouldn't even open my 4k video, and VLC still had stuttering/artifacts while showing it. Note this isn't a problem with x264 4k videos, just HEVC. Could it be that it's HDR? Not sure if that makes a big difference.

HDR can easily choke the decoders setup by default in MPC. With a GTX1080 you should be able to set that up as the hardware decoder by digging through the menus and changing your decoding choices.

You can also use the HEVC Windows codec if you meet the requirements and are in Win10. It will play even HDR files, but the HDR information will generally be ignored on a non compliant display. If your colors appear to be blown out while playing here, yeah, its probably HDR.

Some video conversion programs will be able to tell you if encoded in Hi-10/Main 10, profile information, etc
