Can't play video files

Hello. I've recently installed Windows Xp on my laptop and the default media software was an ugly old version of windows media player so I installed KMPlayer instead but it was very slow so I unistalled it. Now after I made some software updates on my laptop I am using the windows media player 11 I think ( a new version). The problem is that I can't play video files. Every video has Type of file : KMPlayer.mp4 . When I click on a video file it says: Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.

Very strange every video having filename KMPlayer, unless you mean that KMPlayer has set itself as the default player for MP4 files. You should change that default if you've uninstalled it.

WMP 10 doesn't support .mp4 but WMP 11 (& later) does.

Anyhow, for playing MP4 files try this instead: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.en_GB.html

Well I can't change that default. I have WMP 11 and I really don't want to install VLC , I just want to use WMP normally.

Well if your sure you've got WMP 11 (not WMP 10 which doesn't not support mp4 video) I don't know why they won't play. Somehow it seems your mp4 files have got screwed up, I don't know what to suggest.

Start a new thread and let someone else have a crack at it.
