Can't raise multiplier at all (Phenom II x4 965 @ gb-970a-ds3)

Hello there.
I've got Phenom II x4 965 RB-C3 with GB-970A-DS3 (rev 3.0) and i can't do a little x17.5 overclock with it. Even changing bios settings from auto to default gave me cancer. At least i was able to change vcore voltage from crazy auto/optimized setting(1.456v) to a bearable 1.368v and ram freq from 1333 to 1600(single Silicon Power DCLT4GN568S btw). Now to the problem itself. After changing clock rate from x17 to x17.5 and rebooting i keep getting this error from bios:

Boot failure detected
The system has experienced a boot failure possibly due to incorrect configuration.
Previous settings in BIOS may not be compatible with current hardware state.
Current CPU Speed : 0.0MHz
Current BCLK : 201.0MHz
Current Memory Speed : 1340.3MHz

Sometimes i get this error if clock rate set to x17, but never if it set to Auto(but it still running as x17). Tweaking vcore voltage, getting ram to 1333, changing timings etc. doesn't help. All advanced cpu settings turned off. Is it possible that updating bios can solve this problem? My current version is outdated(stock FB).

Not all PHIIX4 965s are Black Editions. Are you sure yours is a Black Edition? They are the only ones with an unlocked multiplier.
It will be either a HDZ965FBK4DGM or a HDZ965FBGMBOX if it is a Black Edition.

It's not a good board to be overclocking with , poor power and thermal design.

Not all PHIIX4 965s are Black Editions. Are you sure yours is a Black Edition? They are the only ones with an unlocked multiplier.
It will be either a HDZ965FBK4DGM or a HDZ965FBGMBOX if it is a Black Edition.

If you don't still have the box it came in, maybe BIOS will identify the processor ID. You could check CPU-Z and see if it goes into enough detail in its CPU page to list the term BE. Otherwise, I can only think of removing the cooler and checking the CPU's heat spreader for the ID.

However, if it is indeed a BE, it should be able to increase its multiplier with no problem. Unless the board/BIOS is screwed up. Is the CPU one you bought new, or was it previously owned? If the latter, it could be fried from over clocking in the past.

AIDA64 CPUID giving me Black Edition in CPU name, and all the info from CPUID seems to match the one i can find on the internet about BE(i can't find non-BE info however). CPU and mobo is new. Have to flash BIOS then.

If its not a BE (I don't think any non BE 965s where ever sold but could be wrong) then you would not be able to raise the multiplier. Sorrry I can't help further but a bios update is worth a try.

Then it looks like you have the BE. Is the problem that you cannot raise the multiplier, or that you can raise it, but it crashes when you take it up one click?
