Can't See Hidden Files on Old Hard Drive

Hi,
I had an old laptop, and though it went down, I saved the hard drive. When I put it into an external case and linked it up to my laptop, the files all showed up but any files that were hidden or seen by administrator only on the old computer's hard drive (let's call it E) are not visible. There aren't many files I'd like to recover but some of those hidden files I need back. How can I unhide them and see them?

Not sure it will work but,

Open 'Computer' in the start menu
Click on 'Organize'
Click on 'Folder and search options'
Go to View
Then click 'Show hidden files, folders, and drives'
Also untick 'Hide protected operating system files
