Hi all,

I'm trying to find the latest bios update for my mother's older desktop because I bought what I was told by a tech savvy friend was the best CPU for the board (https://www.amazon.com/AMD-A10-5800K-3-8Ghz-Processor-AD580KWOHJBOX/dp/B0095VP8D4). I am pretty certain that I need to flash the bios for the board to accept this processor, but I could be wrong. I REALLY can't afford to have problems upgrading this CPU as, well, that means my day ++ gets destroyed trying to fix the damn thing, lol/notLol.

Below is the output from CPU-Z. I tried to use this to find the latest bios but had no luck with the HP site, and when I search online I found this site (https://www.msi-bios.com/msi-bios-number-MS-7788.html) but there seem to be a variety of possible bios' and I can't figure out which one goes to this board. Or even, quite frankly, if this board IS the MS-7788. Sigh. Help?

The two major Q's are:
a) is the processor ACTUALLY going to work in the board?
b) do I need to flash the bios to make that happen?
and c) can someone help me find a direct link to the right bios files? The HP Assistant is worthless, lol.

Thanks so much in advance!

Jay

Upgrade the fan. Seriously. You are moving from a 65w? cpu to a 100w cpu. Your original cooler isn't big enough by half.

Those old Intel stock models were pretty bad for noise and allowing higher thermals and the AMD versions were considerably worse. They usually shipped a 105w cooler for a 100w cpu, even the 140w Hyper212 was such a big hit because of its low price, somewhat quiet operation and a good amount of thermal headroom on a stock cpu.

That's where you should be aiming for, the 140w budget class, which is most of the better 120mm fans and the better 92mm. Careful not to go too cheap, remember that you get what you pay for.

Being HP, you'll not have any real case dimensions, so you'll have to do the measuring.

You want to...
Those BIOS's will not work, those are for the H61 chipset which is an Intel board. finding a BIOS for that old of a board especially an HP one is going to be tricky. The CPU should work (no guarantees) but I would seriously suggest looking on eBay, Facebook Marketplace, etc for a used one, you probably can find one significantly cheaper.

Hi all,

The model of the HP PC is P6-2429, and as for the CPU I already have it so now I'm just hoping it works. I hope that with the model # you ca help me make that determination =) From here it would seem to indicate that it would, i'm just not sure if that is after a bios upgrade or with the current bios revision, which from the table above seems to be:

SMBIOS Version2.7

Directly from your link, CPU Upgrade Path.
Hey - thanks so much; so that answers the question of whether the board can handle the CPU (sorry - i have a complicated reason for needing to double check that Some other help from the same friend has gone wrong and a mobo he picked for me doesn't seem to support the ram he also picked, and the CPU i bought will only work if I flash that board... so I'm a little gunshy right now.

The final Q is whether the info in the link you quoted applies to the current bios the board has (from 2012) or if I need to flash. Sorry for the need to be hand held, but if you can let me know then I'll feel more comfortable diving into my mother's comp to change out the CPU.

Thanks in advance =)

couple things.

Your mobo is an MS-7778 (Jasmine), not a MS-7788 as you keep inserting, that's going to make a massive difference in everything.

The 5800k was supported on the FM2 platform since original bios, so while you do not need to upgrade to get the pc working, later bios revisions also included many bug-fixes, optimizations etc that make the pc run better and stronger and more compatible with more other components like Ram and storage. So that's your call, but it'll function as is.

so 1) I'm so sorry for the typo on the mobo #. bah - thanks for catching it.
2) I can't seem to find any active links that have any bios updates for my board. The closes I came was here but the link seems to be dead (thanks, HP...).

Does anyone know where I can actually get the download link to the most recent Bios? I'm trying to find it myself but I haven't had any luck so far - will keep trying but help is always appreciated.

Sincerely,

Jay

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_3045244-1633733-16

There's several ways to get bios updates for HP, but you'll probably need to go through HP to get them using the Assistant. HP isn't very forthcoming on actually posting updates for public use.

Ahhh - the assistant... you mean the one that says "Your product is no longer supported by HP" and offers no updates for download. Sigh. Is it even possible to determine which version of the bios is the most current? For all I know I have it... sigh.

Barring that, a final question: the CPU Fan is the standard one that shipped with the comp. It currently has a dual core - do i need to worry about having to upgrade the CPU fan as well? Or should it be good with the original one?

BTW Thanks so much for your help today - it's been much appreciated =)

You want to measure from the bare cpu perpendicular, to where the case panel side is. That'll tell you how tall of a cpu cooler will fit inside the case.

Almost all of the budget coolers will work, both AMD and Intel have not changed pinout sizes in years, the sockets may change, but the pins for FM2, FM2+, AM2, AM3, AM3+ etc are all the same. Only AM4 is different.

I am SO glad I asked that question, then. Wow. That would have ended very very poorly,

I'm guessing this is what you had in mind: https://www.amazon.ca/Cooler-Master-SickleFlow-Contact-Technology/dp/B08KD6SPLW/ref=sr_1_2

Does this qualify as "appropriately budget"?

Thanks,

Jay

Yep, definitely budget, and not a terrible cooler. Just be aware that its 160mm tall from floor to tip , and that may or may not physically fit inside your case. 1 mm is not very big, but its enough that if you hit the cooler with the side of the case, you now are squashing the cpu/socket/motherboard. So you Will need to know your cpu coolers limits.

hmm - according to the info on that link it's 120 mm tall =/ Are you looking at another source? Or is there a section I missed?

I hate to ask to be spoonfed, but is there any chance you could recommend a similar model that would be better sized? I just really don't want to order this and then end up having to return it due to size =/

Thanks in advance.

No no lol. The hyper212 use a 120mm fan, that's mounted to the heatsink for a total of 159.7mm.

For the V2 they must have revamped the heatsink finally, if you follow that link all the way to the bottom you'll see the item description. It's listed there as 6.1" tall, which is 154.94mm. Every other iteration of the hyper212 (there's 5 or 6 over the last 10 years) has used the same heatsink/mount and only changed fans. The hyper212 black got a new mount.

CoolerMaster had beat that dead horse.. Dead.

But it's still, after all these years, decent. There are better and there's most definitely worse in that price range.

But does it fit.
