Can't send a fax from win xp pro and DSL modem

I'm using win xp pro sp3 and want to send a fax from the windows fax console. Computer is connected to the internet with a Qwest DSL modem.

Fax console has been configured and I can create the fax but it never gets sent.

Can any one help me determine what I'm doing wrong ?

Windows fax console requires a phone line and a 56k modem. XP can't natively send a fax using broadband to do that you need a faxing program.

So I am looking at the back of my computer and I see a phone port marked "fax modem". Do I need to plug one end of a 56k modem into this port and the other end to a line splitter which hooks up both the modem and my phone to the wall phone outlet ?
