Can't set up static ip

Every time I try to set up a static ip address I get the following error message-"Warning-the default gateway is not on the same network segment (subnet) that is defined by the ip address and the subnet mask. I used this guide to set up static ip in windows 8.

Please tell us, why you want to set a static IP address, because the solution depends on what you want to do with it. The warning means your gateway address needs to be on the same network, because otherwise you will not be able to connect to the internet.

The guide makes several assumptions about your network configuration and is for XP. Unless you have a really good reason to set a static IP leave it as DHCP configured (as mentioned above). I only have one machine configured with a static IP and that's because it acts as a server for the outside world.

Our wireless router an old Linksys died. I set up new Netgear and the network works great now but our two network printers are offline. I was advised to set up a static ip on my laptop then disconnect my printers from network and connect a "wire"(not sure if usb or eternet) and connect to network printers directly then assign the printers an ip address to get them back on line. I ran ipconfig/all from the command line and got these results.

set/reserve static IP address's on your new router, via DHCP options. Better than doing it per device.

Ahh, we are getting closer! I don't think,we need the static IP for that. The fast way may be, to download the manual for the network printer. You will find a procedure to set them up in there. To re-connect them, it might be helpful to reset the configuration stored in the printer and start all over. The manual tells you how to do that as well. Post make and model, if that doesn't work.

We set up a netgear n300 and I am using the netgear genie can you advise how to do this via the genie? I was told that since printers were currently offline that I had to do it the way I tried at first

We have 3 small building fairly close together. The router is in building A along with a Kyocera Taskalfa 3050ci, connected via ethernet to a 24 port switch also in building A. Building B has a Linksys router set to work as an AP. Building C has an ASUS AP and a Kyocera KM-c2525E. Both Kyocera MFP's are offline after router replacement. All computers in 3 buildings are connected to network via wifi.

Ahh there's your problem. Your old route had a 192.168.10.* subnet and your new one has 192.168.1.* as the subnet. You'll have to connect the printers directly to a computer via USB or you'll have to set the IP on a computer to a 192.168.10.* statically and hook it up to the same switch. This should allow you to access the printers settings and change it to the correct subnet (192.168.1.*). I would suggest to set the printers to DHCP, that way if the network configuration changes again you won't have to go through this.

thats why i was trying to set the static ip on laptop but kept getting error messages

everytime i try this I get error message. How do I do this?

Someone else told me the same thing but everytime I try this I get the same error message. How can I statically set my ip to 192.168.10.*

by 192.168.10.* I meant anything in that range, sorry for the confusion. Try to set it at 192.168.10.150 that should be safe and set the gateway to 192.168.10.1, do this for the Ethernet adapter on your laptop. Just remember for this to work you'll have to hook your laptop up via cable to the same switch as the printer and you'll have to change the setting back afterwards
