[SOLVED] Can't stabilize at the expected 3200 CL14? Should something be RMA'd?

Hi all, I recently got a pair of DDR4 3200 CL14 2x16GB from a 4x16GB G.Skill Ripjaws V Series kit from a friend. These are Samsung B-die so should be able to handle OCing easy. However, using the XMP settings for 3200 CL14-14-14-34, it isn't stable. After some tinkering I finally stabilized in P95 testing at 3133 CL14 at 1.4 dram voltage.

I'm wondering if something may be defective or wrong here? Here are my other relevant specs:
  • AsRock B450M Pro4 Motherboard
  • Ryzen 5 3600
Latest BIOS and chipset drivers isntalled. I know B450 is a budget board, but I've seen it handle 3200 and even 3600 RAM fine on videos. Is this my bottleneck?

On it's QVL Asrock says 2933 MHz Max for GSkill RAM with reference F4-3200C14, and GSkil on it's configuration page garantees 2666 MHz Max with your motherboard.
So, I would Say that what you obtained is very good in comparaison of what they garantee.

It's possible that either the motherboard won't allow decent overclocking or you lost the memory controller silicon lottery on your R5 3600. Have you tried increasing the timings to 14-16-16-34? You shouldn't need 1.4v to get 3133 stable at CL14. I think you have some other timings possibly set too tight or some other voltages are set wrong. Are you using DRAM Calculator for Ryzen? If not, I would suggest you start using that for a good idea what timings and settings to use.

If you can't get better than 3133, I would just set 3000 CL14 1.35v and forget about it. You could attempt CL12 or try CL13 with Gear Down mode off. The difference in performance between 2933-3200 is only going to be around 1-5% in games. Unless it's a memory sensitive game or program, you likely won't notice the difference.

Thanks for pointing these things out. I haven't thought to actually check the guarantees, and from this perspective, it makes more sense why.;
