Hey Tom's.

I have need of you once more.

Lately my HDD has been acting up, and I can't quite figure out how or why.

Let me explain.

Today, my PC has frozen on 3 occasions without making as much as a single noise or popping up an error beforehand. At this point the HDD light will stop blinking and there's nothing I can do but reset.

So I decided to use some due diligence and run a test using HD Tune, however at some point during the test my PC bluescreened, and WhoCrashed seems to suggests this was caused by Win32k.sys and a KMODE Exception of sorts.

Is there...Any way of figuring this out without having to tear into my PC? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First, make sure you've got a good backup for you drive on an external. Then download and run SeaTools (it's Seagate, but the brand of HDD doesn't matter). Make sure you run both the long and the short tests. If it fails any of the tests, start shopping for a replacement drive.

I'll get on that ASAP.

I haven't installed new hardware since I bought this PC, which was 2 years ago.

Another program you can use to do a quick check on the SMART status is the Crystal Disk Info in my signature. If it says anything but "Good" yea backup your data and more likely get ready to replace that drive.

May also want to try the Memtest86. Gotta download the ISO and burn it to a CD/DVD and boot form it. Let it run for a few hours.

I've seen bad memory not throw any BSOD's. Its rarely happens but it has.
