Can't turn on WiFi radio

Hi guys,

I know this is a common problem in which there are hundreds of questions and answers on a variety of forums but I have been trying to tackle a problem for a few days now and although I have learned quite a bit I am unable to find a solution to my problem.

I have an Acer V5-571 laptop which originally came installed with Windows 7 and a Qualcomm Atheros WiFi card. I upgraded to Windows 8.1 and everything worked perfectly. I also recently got a Smart TV with WiFi Direct capability, so I have been trying to set up my laptop to stream my laptop wirelessly to the TV. This I have achieved successfully by swapping out my Broadcomm WiFi card for an Intel N 2230 and after a bit of pain with updating drivers and installing the required programs it works very well.

My problem though is that if radio is disabled I can not re-enable it. The only hardware switch I have is the keyboard hotkey Fn+F3, which does an excellent job or disabling the radio, but doesn't even attempt to enable it again. The only single way I can re-enable the radio is to put the Qualcomm card back in, load up Windows, Fn+F3 to enable radio, shut down, swap back to the Intel card, and boot up again. As anyone can imagine this is not an ideal solution every time I want to turn my WiFi on.

I have tried all sorts of ways in Windows that I have read online that some have found successful, but none have worked for me, and from what I have read there is no way to do it from Windows as the radio is hardware locked and can only be enabled using the radio switch (which on this laptop is Fn+F3)

A few things I have tried;

Updating the BIOS and checking any relevant settings (there are none)
Updating all drivers including Chipset, Graphics and WiFi
Updating/Installing any relative drivers/software from Acer
Installing all possible updates available for Windows 8.1
Removing any drivers related to the old Broadcomm board
Running troubleshooting (as an administrator) on the Network Adapter (this only confirms radio is off)
Disabling/Enabling the adapter in Device Manager and in the Network & Control Centre
Turning WiFi off/on in the Intel PROSet software (no option for radio, and also confirms radio is OFF)
Using an netsh interface enable command in CMD
Tried all kinds of ctrl, alt, Fn and F1-12 combinations just in case

Fn+F3 disables and enables all wireless communication perfectly when the Qualcomm card is inserted
Fn+F3 continues to disable and enable Bluetooth, but will only disable Intel WiFi when the N 2230 card is inserted.

My instinct is that the Fn+F3 hotkey is somehow not linked to the Intel card and needs manually fixing.

Very sorry for the essay and thank you for taking the time to read it all, I would greatly appreciate any help with this.

Many thanks,
Graham

Hello! It certainly does, you say it stopped working after a restart, have you checked your BIOS settings? You're radio turned itself off after restarting, it could be because radio is naturally disabled in your BIOS, I think if you have the option to enable it, Windows will always start with radio enabled. Have you also tried updating your BIOS?

Hello, i did check the BIOS and there was nothing about network ... only thing was network stack... if you could help me figure out where is it in the BIOS...

Hi again, I am not familiar with your BIOS or laptop so I couldn't direct you where to look, but when I was looking for a solution for myself I found some people have repaired the problem just by resetting the BIOS to default settings. You could try that option, then save&exit and see what happens. I just checked the ASUS website for your laptop and there has been a few BIOS updates, you could try installing the latest one (209). Also (if you havent already) install the latest chipset driver. I would also recommend installing the latest driver for your wifi card from the mediatek website, but first uninstall it from Device Manager and check the option to remove the software and drivers while you are disconnected from the internet (so Windows won't automatically find the "best" driver online), then install the latest driver from mediatek before reconnecting to the internet. Hope any of these solutions can help you.

i will try those and ill let you know:)
EDIT: Status:
BIOS restore to default settings : Not Working
BIOS update : Unknown
Latest chipset : Not Working
EDIT 2: Soo whenever i try to turn on the wireless capability it appears this and as i said it will turn almost instantly off..
For a second i could see my network..

And if i double click on WLAN it will turn it on show me the network then it will automatically turn itself off..

The only thing I know in Windows that could turn it off is the power management, I know you tried looking at power options but did you try going to Device Manager > Right click your card > Properties > Power Management, and disable the check box that says "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". Also, while you are in there, go to Advanced and see if there is a Property for Radio.

Try power management in my previous message, also I found on a forum someone with an Asus laptop and problems with WiFi, the problem was Wireless Console 3 and they fixed the problem by just removing it, see here;

Mission Success!!!! I did it! now it's working!!! 😀
I went into bios at security locked(blocked) wireless i let it open then i went again into bios unlocked the wireless and enabled network stack and after it did some media checkings and some stuff with Ipv4 and Ipv6 it finally worked 😀 well im going to close my thread and link it to this one
Thanks for all your help!

Great! Now I hope someone can help my problem haha

What's your problem?I might be usefull :)

By the way you might want to post again your issue because many will think it it solved...
Im not sure if you are allowed to do this..
Also who has the same problem as me in the end disable network stack it is not reccomended to have it enabled.
