Hello,

I could find the specific answer in any of the previous threads about.

I have recent taken my step dads laptop due to missing dll files so wouldn’t start up. I had the Vista installation disk so said I would reinstall windows.

Everything worked fine on start up however I can’t download any updates (always checking) or drivers (ethernet/graphics etc). I’ve tried to download these manually from the websites and install them but nothing works. For the drivers I’ve tried to go through device management but they won’t update from there either (just a loading bar).

Any advice? It’s an acre aspire 5715z

You first need ethernet drivers before you can even do windows update so... download the drivers on another computer and place it on a thumb drive and install them on the laptop.

Go directly to your laptops manufacture website and search by serial. It should pull up a list of drivers for your device.

Well windows update on vista is pretty broken and it's pretty complicated to fix it. id say just set it to never check for updates otherwise it might consume most of the CPU.
I would recommend using this:
http://download.wsusoffline.net/
download the ESR version (click where it says Version 9.2.4...it's not very obvious)
run updategenerator and then you can download all of the updates for vista by checking the box in the program
as for drivers... I would use this. https://sdi-tool.org/
It's a HUGE download but it has drivers for almost every computer, Y2k and newer

Ive downloaded, extracted and installed from the above sites but still the same. Both havent seemed to do anything. I know the drivers have downloaded because when i went into it later it said there were no available drivers.

so the driver updater literally did nothing? NO drivers were installed? did you use the full or lite version? (Full version requires a torrent program such as BitTorrent to be downloaded)
As for the WSUS Offline Update Program, look at the documentation and make sure you are using it correctly:
