Hi guys I have a ga h61m d2 motherboard with 2 4gb tmc ram modules ddr3 1333. I purchased a pair of 4gb corsair vengeance ddr3 1600 and when I installed them the computer beeps and just resets. What can I do the motherboard said I can get 16gb, what happened I don't mind buying another pair of vengenaces but only if I know they will work to 16 thank you guys

Ps I need the extra ram because I do heavy duty ram for editing

A little confused here, the GA-H61M-D2-B3 has 2xDIMM slots and due to the H61 Chipset is limited to DDR3-1333, and to obtain 16GB of RAM you need a 2x8GB DDR3-1333 or DDR3-1600 (down-clocked to DDR3-1333) kit.

A couple possibilities, first if you set System Memory Multiplier -> XMP then you'll have a Post Failure (with DDR3-1600 or faster RAM), Second, once in a while when you swap-out kits the CMOS 'can' retain old information and also cause a Post Failure with either RAM or CPU swaps.

The simplest solution is to make certain the RAM is properly seated in the DIMM slots and the DIMM lock is clicked into place. Then unplug the PSU for 5 minutes, move the CMOS Jumper into the Clear CMOS position (see page 21 of the manual) for at least 5+ seconds, move it back to its default position, plug in the PSU to the 'wall' socket. Note: some MOBO's have the Jumper in the accessory bag that came with the MOBO if it's a 2-pin vs 3-pin. See this video -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdHH9KrceR0

Okay, now I get your problem. Right-off it's NOT a good idea to mix-match RAM because you get problems quite often like you're describing. The worst mixes include Frequency, CAS Timings, Voltage, Density...different IC's.

Now if you can post links (**) to both of your kits I'll give you Manual Settings that might work, but in all honesty it's best that ALL of the RAM is the exact same (1st) kit or ... (2nd) kits.

This will require you to boot to the BIOS with (1) kit, make the BIOS settings, install the second kit, and thoroughly test with Memtest86+ for 4 full passes i.e. overnight.

Example:
DDR3-1600 9-9-9-24-2N @ 1.60v ; DDR3-1333 9-9-9-24-1N @ 1.50v JEDEC 667MHz
DDR3-1333 9-9-9-27-1N @ 1.50v
=======================
DDR3-1333 9-9-9-27-1N @ 1.50v ; worst of each kit @ DDR3-1333

(**) - My preference are the 'SPD' CPU-z info for both kits; see below:
CPU-z http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html

softwares-cpuz-05.jpg

Just to save some time, let's ass-u-me the mix is DDR3-1333 9-9-9-27-1N @ 1.50v which is fairly common, so I'm guessing here:

1. Boot into the BIOS with (1) kit

2. BIOS settings:
Load Optimized Defaults
MB Intelligent Tweaker(M.I.T.) /Enter
System Memory Multiplier -> 13.33 ; 100MHz*13.33 = DDR3-1333
DRAM Timing Selectable -> Quick ; sets ALL of the RAM the same
Channel A/B Timing Settings /Enter
CAS Latency Time -> 9
tRCD -> 9
tRP -> 9
tRAS -> 27
-
Command Rate (CMD) -> 1 ; 2 if problems
-
QPI/Vtt Voltage -> 1.10v ; +0.10v with 16GB is recommended and below the max safe 1.20v
DRAM Voltage -> 1.55v ; +0.05v if needed and I recommend that you use 1.55v with a mix

Save & Exit = Yes

3. Add the second kit; each kit MUST be in the same colored DIMM Slots:
CPU: | Kit 1 | Kit2 | Kit 1 | Kit 2|

Easy 1,2,3 ;)

Thanks so much I will try an do that an I will keep you posted, just a quick note should I repeat the bios steps for the 2nd kit?

I've also got a another air of 4gb that are like my old pair 1333's is it safer to use them as oppose to the corsair 1600

Ok right now I have four 4gb parts, each are ddr3 1333 cl9

In theory according to the manual it should work and they do, but not all together just limited to 8gb

That's the problem; DS RAM. Since I only looked at the original [GA-H61M-D2-B3 has 2xDIMM] and not the GA-H61M-D2H-USB3 until now yep the problem is DS RAM so the only way to get 16GB is a 2x8GB kit. I'm not aware of any 4GB/stick RAM that's SS.

I don't understand what's ss or ds ram where do I buy it?

Why would a motherboard have four slots if you can only place two?

DS = Double Sided RAM, and SS = Single. In the simplest terms it's RAM that only has 'one side' instead of 'two sides' with the memory controller (physical sides has nothing to do with it) a more technical term is Ranks.

Frankly, the whole idea of SS/DS I thought was in the past. I remembered most H61's only had 2xDIMM slots but I figured Gigabyte 'somehow' solved the 2xDIMM limitation. They did in a way but it caused a complication in the process, SS vs DS mix.

Again, the second I saw the page it is clear if you want 16GB then 2x8GB is your only choice with that MOBO and the H61 Chipset.

According to crucial you can use 4x4gb ram making up to 16

Im not sure why my 4x4gb 1333 doesnt work

I currently have 24gb of ram (including the corsairs I bought) and I can only use 8

Thanks for your help but I don't think buying more ram will solve this problem
