Can't use public DNS suddenly

Hi all,
I have been using a static public DNS on my win7 laptop without any issues.
recently installed a virtualbox VM (with VB bridged network adapter), and since then no public DNS server works on the host (i get the 'DNS isnt responding' stuff).
I have disabled the virtualbox adapter, but still get the same error.

is there a connection?

I would imagine that the VPN provider disallows outbound DNS traffic to prevent DNS amplification attacks. I doubt there's much you can do about it without using their autoconfigured DNS servers.

Try setting up a public DNS server from Google as your DNS server: 8.8.8.8. If this works, perhaps the DNS server you've configured is down.

Thanks but I have already tried many public dns including google's. none works but the original from VPN which is weird because until recently all worked fine...
