Can't use the Internet

Got a brand new laptop today and it just won't load up web pages. Wifi is connected with full bars and I connected it to the router directly and still won't work . Worked already this morning , I keep getting the same message that the server is taking too long to respond. Happens with every website

What response do you get if you type ipconfig /all in the command prompt window?

Are your other computers connecting without problems?

You can also try the Google DNS at 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4 rather than your ISP DNS.

I'm having no trouble connecting but the connection cuts out after about 20 mins. It also says that it is connected. Also other devices are having no trouble using the Internet on the same modem

Ah, that information is key. When you post try to include all relevant information.

The problem is that your power settings are turning off the wireless after some time, usually 20 minutes. Go into the power settings control panel and change it to never shut off the wireless adapter under the advanced settings.

this doesnt seem to have done much, connection still times out Microsoft Windows [Version 6.2.9200]

this doenst to seem to have worked, I tried the google dns and still have problems and these are the results from the command prompt, I have to resart my router every time it times out to connect. Also i have files downloading flawlessly e.g games, movies

How long is the lease time set for in the router, the usual 24 hours? Also, when you are in the router look to see if the laptop shows up in the router assignment table -- and other devices conflicting on the table?

Everything is fine with the router, My laptop and the other devices show up with green lights. I contacted my internet provider and they said everythig was okay with the connection. They told me it had to be a problem with the computer itself.

When you attached the laptop with an Ethernet cable to the router, you got no connection at all, or it connected but also timed out at 20 minutes?

When you are in the router and look to see if the laptop shows up in the router assignment table -- are there any other devices conflicting on the table? So if you made a list of all connected devices, they all have distinct IP addresses and all are in the network range of the gateway, including the laptop? All are on a single /24 network (subnet 255.255.255.0).

Is the laptop given a reserved dynamic or static address or just a DHCP assigned dynamic address?

edit: and if you go back into the laptop power option, advanced settings, and look at how soon the wireless is powered down -- it is now set to never power down, correct?

when i attach an Ethernet cable the connection timed out.
by assignment table would you mean client list, if so yes it does show up on that along with the other devices with no problems.
\i have a dynamic DNS server
in device manager the wireless adapter is set to never turn off to save power.

While you have unticked the power down box in the device manager, can you also check in the Power Options control panel, for the plan you have selected click "change plan settings," then click "change advanced power settings," open the wireless adapter settings and insure that both on and off battery you have Maximum Performance selected.

Do you have any AV programs running like a Symantec type suite? If so, disable it for now.

I would also reset the winsock and TCP/IP stacks to their defaults if you haven't yet tried that. Just open the command prompt window with a right click open as administrator and then type three lines hitting enter after each, then restart:

netsh winsock reset catalog
netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log
netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

My last thought is to run Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 (freeware) to insure that there is not a virus, possible although unlikely on a new machine. Download it from here and boot up with it and let it scan your C drive: http://rescuedisk.kaspersky-labs.com/rescuedisk/updatable/kav_rescue_10.iso
