My computer monitor has also been turning black randomly and when it turns black all audio ceases and i must force power off.

sometimes when i hit the physical power button, it immediately forces off

i have hp z420
cpu: E5-1620
gpu : ryzen rx 580
32 gb ddr3 ram
default motherboard and psu

. 3 errors i get when it turns black:

-blue screen
-surprise link down error pcie slot 2
-just black screen nothing showing (most common)

possible psu issue? or something else

it doesn't look greyed out to me, it doesn't show a percentage above those 2 columns

blue screen?
Can you follow option one on the following link - here - and then do this step below: Small memory dumps - Have Windows Create a Small Memory Dump (Minidump) on BSOD
that creates a file in c windows/minidump after the next BSOD

  1. Open Windows File Explore
  2. Navigate to C:\Windows\Minidump
  3. Copy the mini-dump files out onto your Desktop
  4. Do not use Winzip, use the built in facility in Windows
  5. Select those files on your Desktop, right click them and choose 'Send to' - Compressed (zipped) folder
  6. Upload the zip file to the Cloud (OneDrive, DropBox . . . etc.)
  7. Then post a link here to the zip file, so we can take a look for you . . .

I'll try to get a blurscreen log, it only BSOD'd like 3 of the 40 or so crashes

surprise link down is a 928 fatal error

It appears its the motherboard - https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Business-PCs-Workstations-and-Point-of-Sale-Systems/Z420-Workstation-quot-928-Fatal-PCIe-error-Completion/td-p/6326177

some answers include:
  • outdated drivers
  • outdated bios
  • card not seated in slot correctly
  • slot not supplying enough power to card
  • slot not working

It was working like 3 weeks prior to this and drivers are all up to date. I installed an older less intensive gpu to see what would happen. Also crashed but no surprise link error. Shouldve mentioned my computer makes 1 long beep after it crashes

its not a very long beep.

I had a similar issue with the Z420. Check the beep guild. But I also did the follow
I pulled the power, removed the cards, and pulled the CMOS battery. After a few minutes I reconnected the battery and power, and added the cards back one by one. It worked so I figured it was a BIOS issue. Also replace the battery if you can. They are only good for 4-5 years (yes they can last much longer depending on use) and depending on how long it has been sitting on the self you may have a dead battery.
