I used to be on a 100Mbps plan with my ISP and had no issues. I recently upgraded to a 400Mbps plan, but speed tests still only show 100. I've tried wired and wireless and still only get 100. I have a Netgear CM500 modem, Nighthawk AC1900 router, and an Intel AC 8260 NIC. My network connection is showing 600+ Mbps transfer capability. I called my ISP back to make sure I upgraded correctly on their end and they said yes. I wanted to try to solve it myself before I had them come out to my house, but I'm stuck. I've been googling for hours and can't find a solution that works. I feel like I'm either missing something obvious or too advanced for me. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Solution
If QoS is turned off, said limits should not be there.
Alternately, you could see if there is a new firmware for the router, if you have never updated it, it is quite likely.
That would likely reset said options and/or possibly fix bugs that might cause issues.
Only thing I can think of, since both modem and router should support gigabit is that for some reason the cable is either damaged or poor quality forcing the link speed between them to drop to 100Mbit instead of gigabit, thus limiting your speed.

Thus, things to try:
Change the cable and see if that makes a difference
plug your computer directly to the modem instead of router and see if that makes a difference, if it does it's either cable between modem and router or.. on router end.

Thanks for the ideas. I switched to a brand new out of the package cat 5e cable and no luck. So then I hardwired directly into the modem and got the 400/40 speeds I was expecting. I went back through the router and dropped back to 100/10. So it appears to be a router setting. I poked around in my settings and I can't see a limiting factor. Any ideas on what to look for? I've been using Netgear Genie to change settings if that helps at all.

get your ISP involved.... they should offer to work on your cables from modem to the outside box.... they usually want to make sure you have no splices anywhere.
i was in a neighborhood that had old copper lines and at the junction box for the neighborhood they had some better optic lines to use they have to manually hook you up to.

the squeaky wheel gets the oil.

So this is interesting. I had QoS turned on. I turned it completely off and it didn't change my speeds. However, within the QoS settings in Netgear Genie, there is a built in Ookla speedtest. Running that speedtest gets me 400/40. Yet when I run any other speedtest in my browser I get 100/10. I then saw under QoS there is a place to change Uplink Bandwidth. I increased it to 40Mbps, and now speedtests are around 30ish, which is close enough to the 40 since I'm on Wifi. So that makes me think there might be the same limitation somewhere for downloads, but I don't see that setting anywhere. Any ideas?

So this is what I think I had to do to fix it. I turned off QoS, then clicked 'Apply'. The router said it was rebooting, but the problem still wasn't resolved. I then manually rebooted the router, and everything seems to work fine now. It's possible I flipped some other settings along the way, but I don't think that did it. I think it took turning off QoS but then doing a manual reboot and not just clicking 'Apply'. Thanks for the help!
