if i connect a external dvd player with a usb connection to my pc can i put a dvd disc in the player and back it up to my pc

I don't see why you would have any doubts about why this wouldn't work.

Then again, this thread is about DVDs, titled "Capture card" and posted in the CPU forum...

Would you ask if it is possible to use pink thread to sew a a pastel coloured embroidered kitten onto a unicorn themed quilt using a phillips screwdriver in a forum dedicated to diesel engines ?

There's also no reason you can't pop the DVD in your DVD drive of your PC and use software such as DVDShrink or DVDDecrypter to back it up. Both are freeware. Would probably save you messing about with your DVD player etc. Hope this helps!
