Hi
I searched google but i cant find anything about what i want to do.
i was wondering if there is a way to make a 12v computer turn on and off using the car signal wire. so if i turn on the car it boots the computer and if turn off the key, the computer would shutdown and not just cut the power?

Solution
On is easy enough and could be done in a bunch of different ways.

Off on the other hand... If it isn't a FAT 32 drive (which it wouldn't be) there shouldn't be any problem with a hard shut down, really.

I can't think of any way to tell the PC to shut down without pressing an additional button or flipping a switch. When the power cuts off it is too late to shut it down, so you can't really do anything - you turn the key and the car is off, too late for the PC to shut down. The only thing i can think of is to have a secondary relay of some kind that, upon power off of the car, allows it to use the battery to complete the shut down.

Maybe look into some sort of mini UPS so when the Car turns off the ups kicks in and sends a shutdown command I think APC units can do it.
