Card Reader doesn't see MicroSD card

I recently took a 4 card reader out of my older computer and installed it in my current Windows 8 computer. It is plugged into the USB2 header on the motherboard. In Device Manager, it sees the device as 4 different disk drives. The one in question is Sony USB HS-SD Card USB Device. "The device is working properly". All drivers are the latest (per Windows). I have tried both a 8GB Class 4 and a 16GB class 10 microSD card, using the microSD adapter that came with the cards (MicroCenter brand).

When I insert a regular SD card out of an older camera (3-4 years old), it shows right up and I can see the files and copy them over to the computer. There is a little green LED on the card reader when I insert the SD card, indicating it is being read. When I insert the MicroSD adapter with a MicroSD card installed, the green LED does not light up at all.

The only thing I can think of is that both of the MicroSD cards are normally in my Android devices, one smartphone and one tablet.

Does anyone know if that may be the issue?

Update: When I insert either of the MicroSD cards into a MicroSD to USB adapter and then insert that into a USB2 port on the computer, the MicroSD card is immediately recognized and the files can be read, copied, etc. So it is not an issue with the cards coming from Android devices, as I originally thought.
