Card wont work in first PCIE slot but it works on the second one.

I have a asus maximus hero vii , i7-4790k. r9 290. I put all the parts together last night using the first pcie slot and everything worked fine. I woke up this morning and booted up to a black screen. I took out the card and put it back in, and it booted with a video signal, got to the windows loading screen, and it blue screen of death. Always blue screens of death at the windows logo. So i moved the card to the second pcie spot and it works fine.

Do i have a defective pcie slot? And how come it worked yesterday fine and out of no where it just broke?

I'd definitely RMA the board. That has to be the problem. But to verify, borrow another card and test with that.
