cartidge life 3 months/Canon i850/drying out?

I do not print a lot (10 pages of text a month + 3 pages of color
photos, avg) but I found I had to replace cartridges for my Canon i850
about every 3 months. They said they were out of ink. At $35 per set of
catridges that is a huge cost ($1) per page.

I used to leave the printer on all the time. Does that make them dry
out faster?

The printer is now not printing well (probably because I ran totally
out of ink once) and I need a new one.

What printer will have a reasonable cost per page with this low usage?

Thanks,

go on to the following link for info on cleaning your print head. The
printer may still be just fine. www.neilslade.com/papers/inkjetstuff .

This should dispell some arguements about OEM vs. third party inks. I
would guess you were the victom of more cleaning cycles than pages printed.
Inkjet printers don't like to be used infrequently. Completely running out
of ink does create problems as well. It would be more ecomical to buy a
cheap laser printer to use for text printing and send your photos out to be
printed. Read Neil Slade's info - all the links - and you will know more
about inkjet printers.

My HP, for months at a time, did not mind being used infrequently. How
do you explain that?

Just pointing out that OEM inks can also cause clogs, Measie. Just in case
you missed that part of the post. Also thought you, as a Canon owner, would
appreciate that the exalted canon printer (I also use canons, as you know)
can get clogs regardless of ink used, and best of all, most clogs can be
cleaned and the printer restored to excellent function in the comfort and
privacy of your own home.

Your syntax is a bit confusing. Do you mean that you are an old codger, or
do I swing both ways for only old codgers, or for any old codger? Do you
feel a bit uncomfortable when another man uses a friendly term of endearment
in addressing you? A bit insecure, are you? Have no fears (or
expectations) from this side of the cyberspace universe - my only addictions
are women and (only on this NG) third party inks.

You know Burt, every ng seems to have it's own Messie and they all
exhibit the same mentality and they all get treated the same by other
members of the ng.
Indeed these are strange birds.

Frank - My entire career and that of my wife were devoted to dealing with
young children and adolescents. For the longest time I couldn't understand
why children who continually acted out and were punished for it continued to
act out. Turns out that even negative responses and punishment were
regarded by these kids as "strokes" or rewards for their abherant behaviour.
In dealing with them we learned to ignore bad behavior and compliment good
behaviour. Positive conditioning at its best, and it often worked. In the
case of Measie (I like your "Messie" even better) I fear that we have been
rewarding his bad behaviour by continuing the dialogue. While it has been
entertaining, it is now taking more of my time than the little bit of help I
am trying to give people from my limited experience and knowledge. I'll try
to restrain myself in the future and stay on point with people's questions.
