Case and motherboard

I am planning on getting a new motherboard and case some time this summer. My question is how do you know what motherboards will fit into a certain case. I know that you look at the form factor or something like that but I also would want to be able to know if I will be able to get to all of my pci slots (I have seen a computer with 5 pci slots but the case would only let you get to 3 and it totally blocked the agp slot). Also, could you please name some good motherboards and cases? I will be using an Athlon XP. Thanks for any help

All standard ATX cases have 7 slots, the standard for Micro ATX is four. Micro ATX boards will fit standard cases, but obviously not vice versa.

I think Lian-Li makes the best case. It is even better than the Cooler Master case I just get. For motherboard I would recommond Asus and Abit.
