Case Lighting: What is a Sound Inverter?

Hey guys!

I just got a new computer from Cyberpower, and I got a case with a window in it so I could fancy-up the inside. I'd like to have at least some of the lighting of the case be activated by the sound coming from the computer (i.e. music, game noise, videos. Whatever is coming through the headphones). Is this what sound inverters do, or would they pick up on ambient noise instead of what's in my headphones?

Some light types like CCFL require a device to increase the voltage and limit the current. This is generally what they refer to as a ballast or inverter.

The sound activated is another part all together, in general these detect sound from the room it self. The ones you link do not seem to be designed to react to your sound card, but instead the sound from the room(speakers/TV/ect).

You can also sound activate leds with a similar setup that does not increase the voltage.
