Cat5 vs cat5e vs cat6

I have been looking at cables to run from my house to my garage. Me and my friends like have parties and we play league of legends and just a whole bunch of different online games. I would like to do it in my garage so we don't wake my parents and it's bigger so we aren't so crowded. The cable I am looking for needs to be at least 250ft. I was wondering if there would be any noticeable differences between the 3 different cables? Would a cat5 cable be fine or would a cat5e be needed? Would it do the job or would it be worth the extra money for a cat5e

well, cat 5e is faster than cat 5, and cat 6 is faster than 5e, so it depends on how much you can pay. i would recommend cat 5e, you wont notice any latency when playing.

I've found some outdoor rated Cat6 on ebay for a lot less than 5e, so either 5e or 6 would be good, but get outdoor rated to run from house to garage, and a Gbit switch and 5e from there to the PCs.

I should have mentioned that the cable will not be staying outside. Just laid on top of the grass for a day or two then wrapped up and put away tell next party. Also I knew that cat5 < cat5e <cat6 but would we be able to game on just a cat5 cable or would I need a cat5e cable or a cat6 cable

well, with current prices, go for cat 5e, its faster than cat 5 and only a little more expensive, and there is no need for cat 6 unless you run servers or something, like google.

For 10/100Mbit network, cat5 or 5e is fine. For Gigabit ethernet I recommend cat6.

At 100 feet, Cat6 is going for about $12.99 and Cat5e is going for $12.33. If you want to save 60 cents per 100', I guess you're technically saving money, assuming the 5e doesn't give your 1gb signal issues near its limit.

You are just contributing to the continued confusion people have on these cable.

Your assumption that cat5e cable will not meet the standard to pass 1g signal when you run at the limits of the cable is the same as me assuming that a cat6 cable will also not meet the standard and fail. Why is your assumption any more right than mine...so I will say you should but shielded cat 7 cable......just because.

To assume a cable does not meet a industry standard for cat5e cable assumes a fraud by the seller of the cable.

A cat5e cable MUST run at 1g at 100m to be allowed to say it meets the tia/eia standard for cat5e. There is no standard that specifies cable over 100m and there is no standard for speeds other than 1g and 10g. Pretty much cat6 has no purpose. At 1g it provide no advantage and at 10g it can not go 100m.

Cat6 cable was invented to allow gig to be carried over 2 pair similar to how 100tx was done but it never was widely accepted.

Well yeah, they both must run 1gb at 100m in a virtually noiseless environment. Cat6 has nearly 10x the signal strength of Cat5e at 100m for the 100mhz frequency that 1gb uses. This could make a difference when emi is involved.

But, whatever, save your $2 on 100m $30 cable.
