All twisted pair cables have a maximum point to point range of 98m (~100m) without intervening hardware. This is true for Cat3 (10Mbps), CAT5 (100Mbps) and CAT6 (1Gbps) cables. If you need to go longer, whilst there are alternatives, the most common would be to use fibre optic cables which can run up to 1km between points, without intervening hardware.
