Hello,
what is in bonehead terms the catalyst control center and what happens when it stops working and how do i get it to work again without having to go to harvard

This has happened to me before and is one of the reasons I tell everybody that ATI/AMD drivers are buggy and always have been. As I recall, no amount of re-installing the driver helped and the only remedy was to wait for the next "update". My ultimate remedy was/is to buy Nvidia.

I've had the same problem for a while, but I found the answer here:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-hardware/catalyst-control-centre-host-application-has/0a0ef1b0-117d-43d8-a43f-9b24228b660b

Simple instructions:
Navigate to c:\ and right click on the file marked "Users." Select "properties." Under the "General" tab, look at the bottom for the selection that says "Hidden." If there is not a check mark in the box, place a check mark there. Hit "apply", a pop-up window should come up, select "yes" to apply to all subdirectories. It might take a minute to make the change, so just give it a minute to finish.

After it finishes, right-click on the "Users" file again. This time remove the check mark and click "Ok" to apply to all sub-directories again. Once it has finished, your files in the "Users" directory should be good to go, and Catalyst Control Center should function normally again. Hopefully this works for you as well...

I am not an expert, but I would guess that if you can't see the "Users" file, it's probably one of 3 things:
1. You have a virus that is "hiding" your files. (This is likely what caused the error in the first place.)
A: Make sure you have removed the malware, then try the steps above again.

2. You do not have administrator privileges.
A: Log in as administrator.

3. You somehow managed to delete that file (not sure if you can do that, being a system file.)
A: Check the Recycle bin and restore it.

Do you (or did you) have a malware infection on the PC? Sometimes they hide your files so that it "looks" like you have a problem, when it's just changing the visibility settings. The method in the post above is just a way to reset the visibility, AFTER you have dealt with any malware. Hope this helps!

None of my full scans with McAfee or with Windows Defender found any viruses or malware. I followed links upon links upon links, and the subject just gets deeper with no real solutions. Finally did system restore to get back to where I was, ran scans, and updated windows. I'm not an avid gamer other than a couple on facebook, so will just ignore the message for as long as I can get away with it.

Everyone's posts helped me...I fixed mine from their posts so I thought I should throw in. I have Windows 7. Here's how I did it:

- Downloaded Driver Cleaner free from CNET

- Downloaded the latest CCC from AMD

- Uninstalled ATI from the control panel, "programs and features" section

- Went to C:\Windows\assembly, sorted on "Public Key Token" and looked for "90ba9c70f846762e." Didn't find it, but if I had I would have deleted that as well.

- Rebooted in Safe Mode, turned off internet, disabled Antivirus/security software

- Deleted ATI folders in C: \program files, and program files x86...meaning I right clicked them and deleted them

- Went into run, regedit, and deleted all ATI and AMD folders in HKCURRENTUSERS\software,
and HKLOCALmachine\software....and I mean right clicked on the folder then deleted...even after they ask are you sure? I have seen suggestions that you want to back up your registry files before you monkey with them. Probably a good idea. Registry is no place you want to get careless.

- Ran Driver Cleaner, selected all AMD drivers and then "clean" for all of them

- Then, installed CCC

- Then, rebooted to get out of safe mode, made sure my virus protection was back up, and then internet was back on...and damn, it worked. I was surprised from all the different methods I'd seen on how to fix this. Mine above combined two or three methods I read about. Hope this helps.

Interesting solution...and it worked like a charm!

Thank you, Aquanaut.

It works... thx

Click the start orb and search "Show hidden files and folder." There you should see "Show hidden files, folders, and drives."
Select it and undo the file attributes that you gave t "Users."

Please don't panic, I certainly did when it happened to me before i remembered in windows 7 by default you cant see hidden folders so it looks like it has disappeared, don't worry this isn't the case. It certainly isn't malware. You've hidden everything in step one so you need to be able to see them to uncheck the box.

To see hidden folders, go to Start, Control Panel, Appearance and Personalization. There you should find Folder Options where there is an option 'Show hidden files and folders'

Hope this helped

Hi,

I decided to join the forum, to pass on some information regarding this
problem, which I experienced earlier today.

I hope it's of some help.

when this problem occurs, most people will instinctively try to reinstall,
but as we know most of the time this does'nt work, what seems to be lacking
is any means to repair the problem, from the most obvious place of all, and
that is the installer, (as with the windows installer for instance).

On this point, I started searching on my system in particular the AMD and ATI
folders, and came across the following file, this is how it appears on my
system, I can't see it being much different on other users systems.

C:\AMD\Support\13-1-legacy_vista_win7_win8_64_dd_ccc\Packages\Apps\CCC2\Core-Static

What I found, was when I clicked on the file which in fact is an installer, was
that one of the options was to "REPAIR", so I chose to repair, after which I
rebooted my system and when I got back to the desktop, everything was back to
normal, I'm not saying this will work for everyone but it worked like a charm
for me, even if it only helps a few people, it's another option as a workaround.

Best regards

I followed these steps but closed the box before removing the check mark. Now most of my desktop icons are gone. where id they go? mikeobi

Hi All,

After spending 6 hours trying to fix the CCC problem on my laptop. I did what most other people suggest, unstall, download new software, re-install... Nothing worked.. So I thought I would check again and then found the very SIMPLE solution of the Users folder. IT WORKS!!!

mikeobi if you still haven't fixed or to others if you come across the same thing. The desktop icons are hidden cos you have hidden the 'users' folders. If you can't find the user folder again cos closed down (I did the same thing!) Open windows explorer again and click on C. Then click in the path bar at the top so it C:\ then type users so it looks like this - C:\Users. You can then find the empty folder and continue with the rest of the instructions to unhide again.

Cheers,
Sarah

Windows platform update - KB2670838 - twice caused Aero to stop working on my win7 ultimate 64bit with 6gb ram and amd radeon hd 6850. Uninstall this update and Aero works fine.
To try this solution, go to control panel > programs and features > in the left panel click view installed updates > scroll through the list and uninstall KB2670838. Then once you reboot > control panel > windows update > in the left panel click check for updates > right click on KB2670838 > click hide - this will prevent it from happening again the next time you update windows.
Or if this doesn't solve the problem, you can always reinstall the update.

Windows Update installed a patch for the AMD 4600 Series on my Windows 7 system. After a reboot and on first start of Google Chrome it changed the theme. Before attempting to back out the update I used the Chrome compatibility troubleshooter. You access the troubleshooter by hitting the Windows Start key/type Chrome in the search box\right click\click on Properties. Under the Compatibility tab there is a link to "Help me choose the settings". Follow the instructions for enabling the system to choose the settings. I accepted the settings changes and now the theme does not change to Basic on Chrome startup.

I did a complete re-install of the AMD software and drivers and unfortunately the CCC not starting problem persists. I do not use CCC so rather than risk causing any further instability by messing with the registry I'll live with it for a while longer. My desktop is relatively ancient so the likely next move will be to swap it our for a Windows 8 system,- trying to avoid models with AMD adaptors.

Amazing solution. It works perfectly!!!!! I am also a tech and I appreciate that!!!!!

I've had the same problem for a while, but I found the answer here:

Actually, "Windows 7, 8, and Vista hide important files and folders from view to keep users from deleting or otherwise modifying files they shouldn’t, but a simple checkbox can change that behavior." I found a website that shows you how to fix this just for future refrences, cheers!

Thanks for this info. Trying it now. Can you please tell me whether the box READ ONLY should have a check mark in it? (Mine does)

Well after following the steps I am still gett i ng the same message; I'm also getting a message that my copy of Windows is not genuine even tho I had v e rified/r e gistered with Windows when I got my computer 3 years ago. I did a search for my USERS file bc after following the firs t step it was no longer visible in my C directory. I found that it has been moved into a f i le called RECOVERED FILES but when I went to follow step 2 it was unnecessary bc the box was already unchecked... but I did refresh just in case.

I'm running HPPavilion 2010i with 64-bit.
I have recently been infected with a virus calld: Artemis1561DDA2A5B38. I ran my McAfee software which quarantined it; I was having these issues even before quarant i ne.

I really need some good help. I HAD TAKEN MY COMPUTER TO A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP A FEW MONTHS AGO BUT IT CAME BACK WORSE!

Should I move my USERS file back to the regular C tree? And, should these files be checked as Hidden or not. My computer is barely moving at the moment. So disgusted and frustrated. I have some work I need to do but can't.

I'm sending this using my Kindle.

THIS! This is what fixed my CCC! I tried making all my folders under /Users hidden and then unhidden, but that didn't work. Repairing the .msi mentioned above fixed this issue. Hope this can help others in the future!
